Job overview

The post holder will assist in the clinical provision of the Molecular Pathology service including examination of and reporting of results for a variety of specialist molecular tests (including FISH) under the direction of the Lead Clinical Scientist

This post is NOT  suitable for candidates  who do not possess extensive Histology knowledge and experience  at Band 6 Level, or equivalent.

 

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist in the clinical provision of the Molecular Pathology service including examination of and reporting of results for a variety of specialist molecular tests (including FISH) under the direction of the Lead Clinical Scientist

The post holder will also be the Quality Lead for the Molecular Pathology service and work with the Histology Quality lead and Pathology Quality Team ensuring the maintenance of service quality to the national standards set by UKAS. 

The post holder will also be instrumental in the ongoing development of the specialist diagnostic and predictive testing service within the department. They will demonstrate effective workflow prioritisation and advanced problem solving. Strong supervisory, teaching and team leadership skills are an essential requirement of the post. A robust, up to date knowledge of Histological and Molecular technique is essential.  It is also necessary the post holder demonstrates and maintains continuing professional development (CPD) as an example to other staff.

The post holder will supervise and train other BMS staff, Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) and other grades of support staff within the department. In addition, they will be responsible for ensuring  compliance with all departmental and Trust policies and procedures and will be expected to write and maintain departmental documents relevant to their scope of practice.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registration as Biomedical or Clinical Scientist
  • Fellowship of IBMS, MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
  • IBMS certificates of extended or expert practice in Molecular Pathology
  • Completion of IBMS Higher Specialist portfolio

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience at AfC band 6 of all key Histology laboratory tasks
  • Specialist knowledge of Molecular Pathology and its role within Cellular Pathology
  • In depth understanding of ISO 15189 for laboratory accreditation
  • Quality management experience (e.g. control of documents, audits CAPAs etc
  • Advanced use of QPulse (or similar)
  • Has a track record of effective staff leadership
  • Participation in the planning and performance of laboratory audit activities
  • Advanced understanding of Histology and molecular Pathology laboratory technique
  • Experience of problem solving and root cause analysis
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Molecular Pathology including FISH

Essential criteria
  • High level of manual dexterity
  • Ability to organise own work and to do so under pressure.
  • Able to manage and prioritise the work of the Molecular Pathology laboratory and direct staff accordingly
  • Able to problem solve
  • Able to write complex documents with clarity and precision for use as SOPs
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Excellent supervisory and teaching ability
  • Confident use of IT (including LIMS systems and Microsoft Word and Excel)

  • In depth understanding of medical terminology appropriate to specialism
