We are recruiting for a Consultant T&O Surgeon with an interest in Lower Limb Arthroplasty and Revision Surgery who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.
Main duties of the job
Applications are invited for a full-time (10PAs) Consultant T&O Surgeon with an interest in Lower Limb Arthroplasty and Revision Surgery. The successful candidate will contribute to the T&O on-call rota which is currently (1:12) with prospective cover.
The catchment area of Medway NHS Foundation Trust covers a population of approximately 350,000. The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics has 3 dedicated ward areas (Harvey ward, Phoenix ward and Ocelot ward which includes 14 protected ultra clean elective beds). They are situated in the new extension at the Medway Maritime Hospital (Level 3 Green Zone) commissioned in March 1999. A Surgical High Dependency Unit was opened in 2006 and a Surgical Assessment Unit was opened in 2005.
Presently, the Department of T&O consists of 15 Orthopaedic Consultants, 2 Orthogeriatric Consultants, 5 Specialist Trainees (KSS Deanery), SAS Doctors, Foundation doctors and SHO's. It Provides a range of trauma, upper and lower limb, boot & ankle, diabetic foot and spince subspecialties. The Specialist Trainees are allocated as per their training requirement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The appointee will be expected, in conjunction with his/her colleagues, to provide a comprehensive Trauma & Orthopaedic service and to contribute to the on-call rota.
The key areas for the postholder will include:
- Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting to the Orthopaedic Service and Emergency Department.
- Play a major role in developing surgical pathways with an emphasis on ambulatory care and trauma patient flow.
- Develop the provision of hip fracture and NAFF services in line with National Guidance.
- Lead quality improvement in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery.
- Clinical leadership in the delivery of high quality Trauma & Orthopaedic Service.
- Providing teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Participate in relevant audit and quality assurance process.
- Abide by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the trust.
- The Successful candidate will be responsible for managing a wide range of Trauma & Orthopaedic conditions and have a special interest in Lower Limb Arthroplasty, Revision and Surgery for peri-prosthetic fractures.
- The department operates activity in the Medway and Swale area therefore clinical/outpatient work is required at MRT and Sittingbourne sites.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration with license to practise
- FRCS in T&O (or Equivalent)
- Entry on Specialist Register (or CCT / CESR expected within 6 months of interview)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical training and experience to CCT standards
- Expertise in hip fracture surgery, including total hip arthroplasty
- Experience in performing revision lower limb arthroplasties (especially Hips) and management of periprosthetic fractures.
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Ability to use evidence-base and clinical audit to support decision making
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines
- Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates
