We are recruiting for a Waste Operator who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.
Waste operatives are an essential part of the hospital team and their primary aim is the welfare of patients either directly or indirectly. They are also responsible for maintaining a comprehensive, professional and responsive high-quality service to patients, staff, visitors and all service users.
Main duties of the job
To provide an efficient & timely waste collection service to wards and departments within the Trust.
Collection from waste rooms, areas and departments/wards of all types of waste items including but not limited to:
- Hazardous
- Non-hazardous
- Clinical
- Non-clinical
- Offensive
- Domestic
- Waste electrical items
- Plastics
- Scrap metal
- Chemicals
- Waste cardboard in cages and bins
- Laundry items from internal and external allocated store areas to the laundry if required
- Confidential Waste
- Unwanted and waste furniture items for disposal.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To secure any waste areas after use and secure any containers used for the processing, storage and disposal of waste produced by the Trust.
To follow all Trust policies and procedures and to report any accidents or incidents through the trusts incident & reporting system (Datix).
To report any traffic accidents & incidents to the Trusts insurance providers if required to do so in a timely and accurate manner.
To drive on the public highway acting considerately to other road user, following the Highway Code at all times & observing speed limits, parking restrictions & any relevant enforcement restrictions applied by the relevant authorities & co-operate with any relevant officers whilst carrying out their duties.
To have the ability to work as a lone worker if required to do so.
To assist with telephone enquiries and data input if required.
To use Trust vehicles to current procedures and policies and carry out any checks required on any vehicles/equipment utilised for the role. To complete any required paperwork, check sheets & log books & to secure Trust vehicles when not in use in the designated vehicle parking area
unless otherwise specified.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- A good level of general education
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- An understanding of good health and safety practice
- A knowledge of data protection
- Have knowledge of waste types and understand waste segregation
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience & ability of working as part of a team preferably in waste industry or similar
- Ability to prioritise work load and use your own initiative if required to do so
Skills
Essential criteria
- The ability to complete appropriate forms and accurately record messages.
- The ability to manipulate trolleys, cages and containers used for the delivery of items to customers and the ability to lift moderate weights
- The ability to communicate verbally with colleagues and others.
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
