The Bed Turnaround Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring patient flow and infection control within the hospital. This role is responsible for allocating and managing bed cleaning and portering teams through the Care Coordination Centre, ensuring all bed spaces, including those requiring enhanced and deep decontamination, are turned around efficiently to meet NHS standards.
The BTT team is a specialised cleaning team trained to handle all levels of environmental decontamination across the hospital, from green to red cleans, including enhanced cleans, deep cleans, terminal cleans, and infection outbreak response cleans. The post holder will also ensure that all necessary protocols, COSHH, site Health & Safety, and infection control procedures are strictly followed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Being a cleaner at Medway Maritime Hospital is a demanding but essential role, directly impacting patient safety, infection control, and hospital efficiency. Cleaners are responsible for maintaining high hygiene standards across wards, theatres, and clinical areas, ensuring that all areas meet NHS cleaning regulations.
By maintaining high cleaning standards and rapid bed turnaround, this role directly contributes to patient safety and operational efficiency. The post holder must be able to work independently, prioritise effectively, and train staff to ensure best practices in infection prevention.
1. Routine & Deep Cleaning Responsibilities
- Daily cleaning of patient areas, waiting rooms, and staff facilities.
- Deep cleaning and decontamination of patient rooms, including infection risk zones.
- Safe use of chemicals, COSHH compliance, and infection control protocols.
2. Infection Prevention & Control
- Cleaning from ‘green’ to ‘red’ areas, including isolation rooms and high-risk zones.
- Using UV light and enhanced cleaning techniques to prevent hospital-acquired infections.
- Adhering to strict hand hygiene and PPE protocols to protect patients and staff.
3. Fast-Paced & Physically Demanding
- Handling urgent bed turnarounds to support patient flow.
- Cleaning in high-pressure environments such as A&E, intensive care, and operating theatres.
- Working long shifts, including nights and weekends, with constant movement.
4. Communication & Teamwork
- Working alongside nurses, doctors, and porters to ensure cleaning aligns with hospital needs.
- Responding to cleaning requests via hospital systems like TeleTracking.
- Attending regular training sessions on infection control, Health & Safety, and emergency cleaning protocols.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Minimum grade ‘C’ GCSE English and Maths or equivalent.
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- Commitment to undertaking further course or study in Customer Care (NVQ) Level 3 or equivalent) NVQ Level 2/A Level or equivalent experience in Customer Care
Experience
Essential criteria
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- At least 2 years customer service experience
Desirable criteria
- Previous acute hospital NHS experience
