Main duties of the job

The successful post holder will be expected to ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.

You will play a crucial role in our multi-disciplinary team that works to support the Medway patients in their preoperative pathway.  You will communicate with patients to offer support, advice in preparation for their upcoming surgery.

You will be supported to undertake Safersleep assessments and the National Standards of preassessment to ensure our patients are prepared psychologically and physically for theatre.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work as part of a team to provide a safe, effective, efficient care environment for patients, relatives and carers in the Pre-Assessment Clinic.

The post holder will undertake pre operative assessments for all elective patients with the use of a questionnaire.

The post holder will work autonomously within their scope of practice, following the NICE, national and local trust guidelines.

The post holder will manage a caseload and prioritise to facilitate an efficient service.

The post holder will work flexibly with the team in the pre assessment and perioperative admissions department.

The post holder will supervise junior staff.

The post holder will be a key member in relation to the development of practice on the ward. They will be working independently / autonomously and at times without direct supervision, accountable for their own professional working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centred care principles.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RN1/RN2/RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Sound knowledge of the National Service Framework and NICE guidelines and application of such within the Pre assessment setting
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Pre assessing of simple and complex patients for all elective surgery
  • Surgical / medical ward experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to administer prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products
  • Able to manage difficult situations
