We’re looking for a dedicated, skilled and compassionate Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist to join our dynamic and friendly Community Perinatal Mental Health Team in Medway & Swale.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a nurturing environment where we take individualised approach for treating mental illness in new and expectant mothers and foster the developing bond between mother and baby.
As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will provide expert psychiatric care to women experiencing mental health issues during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Your role will be key in enabling the recovery and well-being of mothers while supporting the crucial attachment and relationship between mother and baby, ensuring the best possible outcomes for both. In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead and provide expert clinical care for individuals experiencing perinatal mental health conditions. You will work alongside a multidisciplinary team, including specialist perinatal nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, resident doctors, social workers, peer support workers, and nursery nurses ensuring a holistic and empathic approach to care.
Main duties of the job
Together, we support people through the unique challenges of the perinatal period, fostering positive mental health outcomes for mothers and their families.
To provide specialist psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to women with perinatal mental health conditions.
· To work as part of the multidisciplinary team, provide clinical leadership and supervision when appropriate.
· To provide expert assessment including risk assessment and formulate management plans in complex cases, including prescribing advice on psychotropic medication in pregnancy and breastfeeding and to women who plan a pregnancy.
· To work in a collaborative way with maternity services, primary care, health visiting and children and family services ensuring a holistic, integrated approach to care.
· To be approved as a Responsible Clinician and act as Section 12(2) approved doctor for the purpose of Mental Health Act assessments.
· To support the development and training of acute hospital staff and mental health staff to increase knowledge and skills in perinatal mental health.
· To provide regular supervision for resident doctors and contribute to research, clinical governance and service development.

Person specification
Training, Qualifications and Registration
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise.
- On the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
- Approved Clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
- Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
Desirable criteria
- Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
- MRCPsych
- Additional clinical qualifications
- In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
Clinical Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Excellent knowledge in Perinatal Psychiatry, including national standards and guidance
- Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
- Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
- Training or experience in Perinatal Psychiatry (at least 6 months in the last 5 years)
- Knowledge of infant health and development relevant to perinatal psychiatry
- Completed minimum of three years full-time training in psychiatry
- Clinical expertise in the assessment and management of risk.
Desirable criteria
- Attendance of RCPsych perinatal masterclass
- Experience of working in a Community Perinatal Mental Health Service
- Experience of working in a psychiatric Mother & Baby Unit
Academic Skills and Lifelong Learning
Essential criteria
- Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
- Ability to work in and lead team
- Demonstrate commitment to shared leadership & collaborative working to deliver improvement
- Participated in continuous professional development
- Participated in research or service evaluation
- Able to use and appraise clinical evidence
- Has actively participated in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes
Desirable criteria
- Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
- Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken
- Experienced in clinical research and /or service evaluation
- Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
- Experience of planning and delivering perinatal mental health teaching, training and supervision to undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees, mental health professionals and/or non-mental health professionals.
