Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust (DGT) is a dynamic and transforming Trust, wishing to appoint one trained Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedics Surgeon to be involved in our continuous mission: to deliver the highest standards of care through our Trauma and Orthopaedics service. We are looking for a candidate with sub-specialisation in knee arthroplasty and knee revision surgery.

Our service delivery includes the provision of care across Darent Valley Hospital (DVH) in Dartford, Queen Mary’s Hospital (QMH), Sidcup, Erith and District Hospital, Bexley and Gravesham Community Hospital in Gravesend, as well as a number of community locations across our population.

 

Main duties of the job

This is a consultant post to support general expansion, repatriation of patients from London to the Trust including the activities from Queen Mary Sidcup from October 2013. This post is committed to providing an Orthopaedic and Trauma service with sub-specialisation in upper limb surgery with an interest in Elbow, Hand and Wrist surgery. This post will be full time on the new consultant contract. The successful candidate must be on the GMC Specialist Register.  

 

Currently the directorate consists of 12 Consultants (8 Lower Limb and 4 Upper Limb). This post is being advertised to meet the increasing workload, enhance new developments and support the current Orthopaedic service both at DVH and QMS sites. The successful candidate will also undertake general trauma service and participate in the on-call rota (1 in 8 weekday and 1 in 11 weekend). There will be a requirement for the candidate to operate and provide OPD service. 

 

The department is committed to training of our junior doctors by providing daily trauma teaching session and a weekly education session. There is a monthly audit meeting for presentation of audits and research by the junior doctors. 

Working for our organisation

Dartford has joined with Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells and Medway NHS Foundation Trusts to form the West Kent Urology Cancer Centre (WKUCC) based at Medway Maritime Hospital. There is a weekly joint cancer MDM at Dartford using video conferencing to ensure that the National Peer Review guidelines are met.

To support the Urology department, we have 4 clinical nurse specialists in post to support the urology service in Dartford, one nurse specialist is currently performing flexible cystoscopy. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  •  T   The post holder will participate in the consultant led trauma service to maintain a high quality trauma service with consultant involvement in early operative work and fracture clinic supervision. The appointee would be encouraged to further develop and update skills in the acute management of complex fractures and reconstruction of intra-articular fractures. 

    - Surgical work will encompass the whole range of general orthopaedic trauma surgery including joint replacements and reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery and a specialist interest in upper limb surgery.

    The post holder will be required to adopt a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge in partnership with other consultant colleagues. 

    -    He/she will be expected to fully participate in the teaching activities of the Directorate. 

    -     He/she will share in the Directorates management and administrative responsibilities by representing the Orthopaedic Directorate in Trust committees. 

    -    The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. 

    -   For purposes of management and use of resources he/she will be accountable to the Clinical Director of Orthopaedics working closely with the operational Managers, to ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated. 

    -     Research activities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties, will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available following successful application to the local research and development committee. 

    -     The appointee will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff. 

    The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision, management of junior staff and participate in their appointment with other Consultants. 

    The appointee will participate on a regular basis in the process of Clinical Audit within the department. 

    He/she will be required to maintain an "on call" commitment and to provide prospective cover for colleagues on a mutually agreed basis in respect of absence from duty.  He/she will be expected to co-operate in the present agreed framework of the directorate management structure arrangements. 

    The post holder is responsible for ensuring that he/she meets the national requirements for CPD, both internal and external.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registerable medical qualification, MRCS/FRCS Orthopaedic
  • On specialist register or within 6 months of CCT
  • Full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Research degree/MBA

Training and experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide experience in all aspects of Trauma and Orthopaedics
  • Upper limb experience
Desirable criteria
  • Revision surgery
  • Minimal invasive or access surgery
  • Complex elbow trauma surgery

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit
  • Evidence of previous audit

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Committed to training of junior doctors

  • Teaching qualification

Administration

Essential criteria
  • Experience in working in a Trauma and Orthopaedic unit
