Job overview
The post holder will be a Nurse Colposcopist (a registered nurse trained and competent that
is accredited in accordance with the standards of the British Society for Colposcopist and
Cytopathologists) responsible for the management of a defined caseload of patients
attending colposcopy clinics and will provide highly specialist nursing support, education and
care to that specific group. They will ensure continuing responsibility for the assessment of
care needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.
The post holder will contribute to achieving the colposcopy service objectives and work
within the clinical governance framework at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust.
Main duties of the job
. Clinical Responsibilities
1.1 To ensure all necessary material resources are available and allocate as appropriate
1.2 Assess, plan, implement and evaluate physical, social and psychological care, according
to the needs of the patient
1.3 Perform independent colposcopy and cervical screening examinations
1.4 Make appropriate decisions regarding referral to Colposcopy MDT.
1.5 Responsible for the safe storage, use and administration of all medicines and substances
according to Trust policy
1.6 To maintain and update skills required for cervical screening and colposcopy
1.7 Provide suitably trained person/s to assist in clinical procedures, whilst maintaining the
patient’s safety during invasive procedures at all times
1.8 Act as the patient’s advocate during consultations, investigations and treatment
1.9 Ensure nursing practice is evidence-based, within own scope of practice and that all clinical
policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines have all been agreed with the Matron and
been through the correct governance process
1.10 Lead on improvement projects within the Colposcopy Service

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Clinical Responsibilities

1.11 Act as an effective role model, resource and advisor to lead the assessment, co-ordination
and care delivery
1.12 Lead on facilitating and supporting efficient and effective patient pathways and care
programmes, ensuring high standards of care
1.13 Ensure that patients are processed through the department in a safe and timely manner
1.14 Lead on ensuring that there is effective communication within the department, including
liaison with medical staff and other disciplines and services
1.15 Supervise and co-ordinate the clinical standards of all staff within the department and inform
the appropriate personnel of changes in circumstances which may affect the delivery of
care within the unit
1.16 Lead on clinical governance and quality assurance for the service, show leadership and be
an effective change innovator in areas of patient safety and clinical effectiveness
1.17 Undertake clinical audits as required, and to be responsible for monitoring and evaluating
ways to use this data to inform staff and to improve patient care
1.18 Responsible for the maintenance and checking of emergency and resuscitation equipment
and procedures
1.19 Maintain own professional practice and have knowledge of new developments
1.20 Be aware of new concepts within clinical practice and promote and participate in such
schemes
1.21 Ensure that all documentation is accurate and timely, adhering to local policy and procedure
and meeting legal requirements where appropriate
2. Managerial Responsibilities
2.1 Manage own time, resources and diary
2.2 To ensure that the Colposcopy Department complies with local and national health and
safety standards, including highlighting risks and completing risk assessments
2.3 Work closely with the Gynaecology Outpatients Senior Sister, the Matron and Service
Manager regarding all management, quality and performance issues related to the
Colposcopy Service.
2.4 Daily organisation of service/ patient caseload
2.5 To respond to all appropriate PALS enquiries and complaints, both informal and formal, and
to any quality alerts, if required
2.6 To attend national, regional or local meetings as part of the Colposcopy Team
2.7 Oversight of the current demand and capacity for Colposcopy, and the management of
national targets, including the organisation of ad-hoc extra sessions as required
2.8 Supervision and mentorship of new staff to the department
2.9 Maintaining and monitoring standards of performance for the department
2.10 Participate in the development and update of local policies, as well as assisting in the
implementation of national, Trust and local policies
2.11 Participate in data collection, evaluation, audit and accreditation as required
2.12 To be integral to the development of the Colposcopy Department, ensuring compliance with
the BSCCP Quality Standards
2.13 Assist with interviews and selection of new staff, supporting their induction and training
2.14 Lead on the use of lessons learnt from complaints or incidents in any teaching or training
programme.
2.15 Present progress updates of project action plans at multidisciplinary meetings and answer
queries relevant to the project including data and statistical analysis where required
2.16 Ensure a high level of professional awareness both personally and throughout the
directorate by holding/attending appropriate meetings, seminars, etc.
3. Education and development responsibilities:
3.1 All budget holders will undertake on the job training in all matters financial and will be
responsible for ensuring they are setup in the finance/procurement/HR systems with the
appropriate authorisation levels.
3.2 Undertake annual review and statutory and mandatory training
3.3 Provide learning opportunities for staff, (including classroom teaching and bedside training)
3.4 Support the mentoring and supervision of student nurses and midwives whilst on placement
in the Gynaecology Outpatients Department, and allocated to sessions to Colposcopy
3.5 Link with other organisations to facilitate education of self/others
3.6 Comply with NMC revalidation requirements
3.7 Ensure attendance at department training sessions as required for
professional/personal/service development
3.8 Act as an effective role model, educator, and personal mentor/supervisor for other staff,
student nurses and midwives and other trainees, participating in their development
programmes

Infection Control

For clinical staff with direct patient contact, this will include the uniform and dress code
policy, the use of personal protective equipment guidance, the guidance on aseptic
techniques and the safe handling and disposal of sharps.
All staff are required to attend mandatory training in Infection Control and be compliant with
all measures known to be effective in reducing healthcare-associated infections.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 1 years’ experience at Band 6 as a Colposcopy Nurse
- Previous experience working within a gynaecology setting
Desirable criteria
- Previous management experience (ward or OPD) in the NHS
