Job overview

The post holder will carry out a full range of Maxillofacial nursing duties and provide high quality 
care. They will be clinically responsible and accountable for the treatment and management of 
patients in their care and will work independently under the clinical supervision of the sister/nurse 
in charge.
They will anticipate the clinician’s needs and any potential complications which may arise. This will 
include assembly of equipment, mixing materials and holding instruments in position during 
procedures.
The post holder is responsile for providing specialist nursing support to the Maxillofacial Surgeons 
within the department.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the management and well being of the patients undergoing treatment in the 
department, working on your own initiative, but under the management of the sister.
Receive and prepare patients for treatment and ensuring that all information is available in 
notes prior to surgery.
Advise patients, relatives or carers on pre and post-operative instructions.
Assist the clinical staff within the Maxillofacial specialties.
Ensure safe storage, use and administration of all medicines and substances according to 
Trust Policy.
Maintain the patients safety during invasive procedures.
Act as the patients advocate during consultations, investigations and /or treatment.
Clean and prepare the oral surgery rooms prior to clinics.
Responsible for ensuring correct instruments/equipment/lmedicaments are available for 
sessions and the clinical area is set up appropriately prior to treatment, adhering to infection 
prevention and control guidelines. 
Assemble and utilise equipment as required, including specialist equipment
Clean and maintain equipment and instruments.
Clean away infected material after procedures, including sharps and bloods.
Maintain patient records to ensure information is accurate and up to date, both on paper 
and electronically, including Audits.

Person specification

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered with the GDC as a Dental Nurse with knowledge of range of dental procedures; acquired through NVQ 3 or equivalent experience / training plus experience to diploma level or equivalent
  • Evidence of Enhanced CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Post basic certificate in any of the following Maxillofacial, Special care, Oral Health

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills. Able to deal with emotional/anxious patients.
  • Ability to plan own workload on a day-to-day basis.
  • IT Literate
  • Standard keyboard skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience as a Dental Nurse.
Desirable criteria
  • Registered Dental Nurse with experience of working within an acute hospital setting in a Maxillofacial Department.
