Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with the Senior Management and Clinical Teams to deliver a robust clinical coding validation programme to achieve and maintain the highest possible quality of coded clinical data. The validation programme will extend across all specialties involving all clinical teams, using the ICD-10 and OPCS-4 Classification adhering to National and Local Clinical Coding Standards. You will be:
· Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
· An Accredited Clinical Coder Qualification (ACC)
· Have an-depth knowledge and understanding of the complete clinical coding function from ICD-10, OPCS-4, HRGs and the impact on Trust funding, Payment by Results and health care statistical data
· Working expertise in ICD10, OPCS4, HRG4+, PbR and financial flows
· Extensive validation experience with clinical staff
· Minimum of 3 years recent experience in clinical coding/leading role in an acute hospital environment.
· Evidence of substantive coding experience and expertise

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Work closely with Clinical Teams to analyse variances in data and develop improvement plans
- Review Clinical documentation and provide expert Clinical Coding support to clinical teams in documentation improvement projects
- Lead in validating patient activity across all specialities and feedback to both clinical staff and the Clinical Coding team leading to an improvement of HRG and Tariff generation
- Encourage clinician validation of coded data, to instil confidence and assurance of coded-data within the clinical teams
- Develop a programme of engagement with Clinical Teams as an opportunity for clinicians to meet coders to discuss and resolve problems
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with consultants and their clinical teams to ensure quality and depth of clinical coding is achieved
- Promote the Clinical Coding Department and best practice in clinical recording and coding across the Trust.
- Attend appropriate directorate/ operational meetings to update on performance and the quality of clinical coding.
- Attend regular meetings with Lead Clinicians and Divisional Managers in order to discuss variations of coded data and identify opportunities to improve source documentation underpinning the coding process.

Instigate the analysis and investigations of areas where clinical and operational managers highlight specific issues and problems with the way data is documented/coded
- Analyse the results and findings from benchmarking exercises, and share with clinical/operational teams to agree corrective action
- Use benchmarking tools to identify variances in consultant/speciality/trust-level data recording
- Produce analysis and results reports to be shared with appropriate coding clinical and operational groups within the Trust

Education and Training
Essential criteria
- Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC)
- NHS England Clinical Coding Standards Course
- Up to date Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- Auditing Clinical Coding Qualification or in the process of obtaining the audit status
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of national & local performance & quality standards
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of the complete clinical coding function from ICD10, OPCS-4, HRGs and the impact on Trust funding, Payment by Results and health care statistical data
- ICD10, OPCS4, HRG4+, PbR and financial flows.
- Highly-developed specialist coding knowledge underpinned by theory and experience.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills - both oral and in writing
- Ability to abstract and analyse complex patient records and use judgement to translate complex cases
Experience
