Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities:

Core Technical Responsibilities

Leading a team in the production of SQL DBA’s, primary responsibility to ensure SQL server instances are performant, secure, actively managed and monitored.

Responsibility for the formulation and implementation of policies internal to the DBAs, relating to the support and maintenance of SQL database servers, which provide Trust-wide clinical services and financial services.

Ensuring the data governance is in place for the operational running of the data warehouse environments, including standard operating processes, training materials and logic maps.

Responsible for the data architecture within the data warehouse environments, establishing clear structures and the supporting training and documentation so that the architecture is understood by all users.

Responsible for all configuration issues relating to SQL servers and database options including logging, collation, paging and indexing.

Responsible for setting and maintaining database plans, backups and options.

Responsible for database migrations – planning, dress rehearsals, validation and post migration clean-up.

Operational responsibility, when SQL server or database problems occur, for making the decisions regarding the most appropriate action to ensure continued (24x7) availability of core systems within the boundaries of DBA and Trust IT security policies.

In database development terms, responsible, without direct supervision, for the translation of functional user requirements into a technical implementation plan, sometimes requiring major new design work and substantial redesign of existing database and where appropriate modifying code in older release technologies.

Working at a highly complex level of technology, using a mixture of SQL Server releases and operating systems, to undertake detailed analysis, design, programming and testing work on all SQL systems developed within IT Services.

Person specification

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level in a subject relevant to the post or equivalent alternative education/experience in data architecture and data warehousing
  • SQL certified production or other relevant SQL accreditations
  • Source Control
Desirable criteria
  • Masters degree in a subject relevant to the post

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Technical expert in SQL
  • Subject matter expert in data warehousing and architecture
  • Technical expert knowledge in NHS data management and data rules
  • Subject matter expertise in SUS/SLAM data flows and national tariff processes
  • Knowledge of best practice in terms of data warehousing, data architecture and the establishment of robust data quality systems.
  • Qualifications or experience in the development and deployment of PowerBI.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable progress towards meeting the national competency for data professionals for the skills identified associated with this role
  • Establishing change control processes and impact assessments.
  • Knowledge and skills in other coding languages such as R, Python etc.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience in database design, SQL configuration and in performance tuning support environments that involve complex database systems and server configurations
  • Significant experience of project managing the deployment of a new NHS system that involves data warehousing and SQL.
  • Experience of developing SSIS packages
  • Experience of working on cross-functional deployment teams across multiple subject matter experts.
  • Experience of delegating and managing staff
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a response-critical environment where system up-time and availability is paramount.
  • Working across organisational boundaries

  • Ability to manage own workload, whilst leading a team and managing their workload to ensure delivery for the whole team.
