Job overview

An excellent development opportunity has arisen for a qualified nurse or soon to be qualified Nurse to join the Theatre Department at Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

The post holder will be responsible as a member of the team for the maintenance of a high standard of patient care, working with the team to ensure that our Theatre services, are utilised efficiently and effectively.

Assist in the implementation of training and development needs of the multi-disciplinary team

We have 18 theatres covering specialities from Orthopaedics, Vascular, Urology, Robotic surgery, ENT, Max Fax, and Ophthalmology, EVT, Mechanical Thrombectomy. You may be required to work between all of these theatres.   

Main duties of the job

•    To assist with the ongoing organisation of the unit, including responsibility for a designated area of practice within department on a daily basis, to ensure optimal theatre utilisation at all times.
•    Provide effective managerial and clinical leadership of the departmental staff in conjunction with or in the in the absence of band 7 Theatre coordinator
•    Participate in the development of staff, ensuring appropriate skill mix and uphold agreed standards of care.
•    As appropriate, participate in disciplinary, grievance and absence management procedure
•    To actively support the process of risk management and health &safety upholding relevant policies to promote this and ensuring incidents are reported appropriately (in writing) and helping identify ways of preventing errors and accidents to both patients and staff.
•    To participate in the allocation of staff in designated area of responsibility.
•    To participate in the on-call rota
•    Responsibility for the emergency theatre during unsocial hours.
•    Undertake individual performance review and the identification and implementation of personal development plans for junior staff both registered and unregistered.
•    Facilitate open and effective communication within the multi-disciplinary team
•    Monitor the compliance of all Trust Policies and National Guidelines

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Qualification on NMC Register
  • Evidence of on-going personal and professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Degree/ working towards or equivalent experience.
  • Facilitation/ Coaching /mentorship programme.
  • Practice supervisor / Assessor Training

Clinical skills and experience

Essential criteria
  • Continuous recent experience as Band 5 scrub practitioner in acute setting.
  • Experience of mentorship/clinical supervision.
  • Demonstrable interest and commitment to the professional development of others.
  • Ability to organise and manage day to day departmental activities and the activities of large multidisciplinary team within this.
  • Are able to relate and communicate with patients and staff at all levels and from different professions.
  • Understanding of the issues pertaining to clinical risk management.
  • Are able to respond to unexpected issues and provide first line response and to identify appropriate sources of secondary support.
  • Ability to delegate appropriately and prioritise work independently.
  • Good teaching/facilitation skills
