Band 7 Children's Occupational Therapist
Full Time Hours 37.5 per week

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our team. An exciting opportunity has arisen, to work as a Band 7 Occupational Therapist in the Children's Occupational Therapy service overseeing the EHC assessment provision in the team. This will involve completing assessments and providing reports for statutory assessments, alongside providing quality assurance of reports and the opportunity of multi-professional working by attending EHC panel.
The post holder will work as part of a team, to provide a high-quality occupational therapy service to children up to 18 years of age with difficulties in play, self-care and/or school occupations due to a variety of conditions.
They will plan and provide specialist Occupational Therapy assessment, advice, and Intervention for children with functional difficulties, working closely with the multidisciplinary team, school staf,f and families. They will work autonomously and without direct supervision in a defined clinical area and will be accountable for their clinical actions.
The post holder will see children in a variety of settings including the Phoenix Children’s Resource Centre, children’s homes, special school provisions, mainstream schools and nurseries.

Main duties of the job

To provide Education, Health and Care plan assessments, high-quality reports and reviews within the statutory timeframes and to keep up to date with best practice with regards to the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND).

To be responsible for overseeing the EHC assessment provision within the service and quality assurance of reports to ensure these meets the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice and guidance from the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.

To maintain and demonstrate specialist knowledge of the EHC process and appropriate legislation, to lead on EHC’s and the SEND Code of Practice within the OT team.

To carry out assessments and evaluate the child’s occupational performance through, e.g. the use of standardised and non-standardised assessments, observation, interview with parent or carer and/or parent and teacher questionnaires.

To manage a complex clinical caseload, using evidence-based practice and client centred care, undertaking assessment, interpretation of assessment results, evaluation, meaning goals, treatment, and advice.

- To have specialist knowledge of complex cases, regarding appeals and the tribunal legal process and to be the Lead Occupational Therapist, working closely with the SEN Team by contributing to appeals as an expert witness where OT provision is contested, if required.

- To be able to independently manage a complex caseload within a community paediatric setting, using initiative, excellent organisation skills and the ability to prioritise workload and own time effectively, manage multiple tasks.
- To be able provide Education, Health and Care plan assessments, reports and reviews within the statutory timeframes.
- Demonstrate excellent leadership and ability to empower others in practice, this includes the ability to delegate to others
- To be able to assess and analyse a child’s functional abilities using standardised and non- standardised methods according to best practice, utilising activity analysis skills.
- Excellent written communication skills with the ability to record actions and decisions accurately and succinctly within notes and reports.
- Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills, communicating with a range of professionals, children and parents in a professional and sensitive way.
- Able to feedback regarding Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention to both parents and children in an appropriate way and able to manage difficult conversations with empathy and tact.
- Excellent working knowledge of child development and varying conditions and the implication for Occupational Therapy
- Able to practise using evidence informed approach for assessments and intervention, using occupation-based focus and confident in relating theory to practice.
- Able to work cooperatively within a team, and to support the team in establishing new initiatives.
- Current driving licence and have a vehicle to use for work/able to use public transport time effectively for visits across a large borough.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience of working in community/ NHS Paediatric practice.
- Demonstrate expertise within clinical area underpinned by theory and significant postgraduate experience
- Experience in the assessment and provision of Education, Health and Care reports.
- Experience of child centred practice and goal setting with families and school (including co-production of EHC outcomes with families)
- Excellent understanding of The SEND Code of Practice, Education Health Care Plans and the legislation that supports them.
- Evidence of partnership working to ensure effective whole system working, through effective communication and networking with other services.
- Evidence of responsibility for complex caseload management.
- To be able to assess and analyse a child’s functional abilities using standardised and non- standardised methods according to best practice.
- Experience in assessment, planning and delivering occupation focused intervention for children with a complex need. E.g. sensory processing difficulties and children with physical disabilities
- Experience of equipment assessment and prescription and its principles in the paediatric setting
