Chief Biomedical Scientist Immunology

Job overview

Pathology are looking for a Chief Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic and thriving team of 9 BMS’s and 4 AHCS’s in our Immunology laboratory. The Immunology service is based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. The laboratory is the specialist Immunology laboratory serving the Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN) and has UKAS accreditation.  Services provided include autoimmune serology, allergy, protein electrophoresis, specific protein measurement and cryoprotein investigations. The laboratory works closely with our consultant Immunologist supporting allergy and immunology clinics in addition to planning the delivery and development of laboratory services.

Applicants should be enthusiastic effective leaders, have extensive immunology knowledge and have a good track record of managing staff and laboratory resources. You must be able to demonstrate achievement of targets, of implementing service developments and service transformation initiatives, a high attention to detail and excellent communication skills. Main duties of the job

·        

Lead, manage and develop Immunology laboratory services, deploying staff and resources as appropriate.  Promote cross-discipline and team working, ensuring that all staff benefit from professional development.

Ensure quality of service meets nationally accepted standards (UKAS ISO 15189 or equivalent) to the satisfaction of the Head of Service for Clinical Biochemistry & Immunology

Provide leadership and ensure professional and personal development

We are at an exciting point of our network development with a new clinical director and managing director leading transformation including single Laboratory Information Management System, Managed Equipment Service and digital projects.  We are developing a clinical strategy enabling pathology to drive change and improvement in patient pathways and population health.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·         Promote effective team working of staff within Immunology and the wider Clinical Biochemistry teams

·         Meet regularly with Consultant Immunologist and Head BMS to discuss the Immunology service delivery,

·         Ensure the attainment and maintenance of UKAS accreditation with adherence to standard operating procedures, which are regularly reviewed.

·         Achievement of satisfactory NEQAS and other external quality assurance schemes to the satisfaction of the Head of Service.

·         Direct the training and development of all staff in Immunology, ensuring up to date training logs and the continuous professional development of Biomedical Scientists and Assistant Healthcare Scientists.

·         Lead in the recruitment and selection of Biomedical Scientist and Assistant Healthcare Scientists.

·         Perform regular performance review and appraisal of staff, correcting any poor performance and alerting the Head BMS to any concerns.

·         Participate in the development of service models, which may require working extended days and possibly weekends if the service needs demand.

Qualifications and experience

Essential criteria
  • • HCPC State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • • A national accredited degree or equivalent
  • • A Higher post graduate qualification accepted by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (The Professional Body) and leading to the Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. This will be a higher degree such as the Master of Science degree (MSc) or equivalent in an acceptable subject and from an accredited University
  • • At Least 3 years’ experience as a Senior BMS or above in a busy UKAS accredited Immunology laboratory.
  • • Track record of managing staff
  • • Evidence of contributing to the development of Immunology services and of recent personal development.

  • • Track record of teaching and presenting to staff and students

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Extensive knowledge and experience with the analytical and technical skills required to undertake the work of the section(s) managed
  • • Highly developed interpersonal and organizational skills with a keen eye for detail, excellent communication and presentation skills
  • • Highly developed IT skills and conversant with word processing, spreadsheet and power point applications.
  • • Highly developed teaching and training skills, being able to effectively communicate with various grades of staff of differing intellectual abilities including medical staff and from differing professional backgrounds.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Considerable and up to date knowledge of advances in Immunology
  • • Understanding of general developments in the NHS and how these affect Pathology services generally
