Job overview

We are recruiting for a Phlebotomist who wishes to join our busy Phlebotomy team at #TeamIOWNHS. You should share our passion and drive to ensure that our patients and staff receive quality and compassionate care and work with us to ensure the Trust continues its journey towards great people, great place.

The Phlebotomy team provides a phlebotomy service to the hospital wards and the walk-in clinic.

Applicants ideally will have recent / previous experience in phlebotomy. Refresher training can be arranged if required and personal development is actively encouraged.

Main duties of the job

As a Phlebotomist you would be part of the phlebotomy team working within the wards and clinic collecting blood samples. You should be an effective communicator, have a keen eye for detail and be able to work under pressure.

At the present time the department operates between 07:30 and 16:30 Monday to Friday plus weekend shifts. Successful candidates will be required to work flexibly across all shifts and any future potential areas where phlebotomy is required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will contribute to the provision of a high quality, phlebotomy service for patients on the Isle of Wight by obtaining blood samples from patients through venepuncture and ensuring that blood samples are labelled correctly in preparation for being forwarded to laboratories.

The collection of blood by venepuncture will take place in designated areas i.e. the Phlebotomy Outpatients Departments at St. Mary’s and the wards at St. Mary’s Hospital.  However, phlebotomists may also be asked to attend other Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Trust properties in the performance of their duties.

  • Understanding of job role.

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to sit or stand in a restricted position for a substantial portion of the time (standing/ bending/ stooping to obtain blood samples).
  • Able to exert moderate physical effort when manoeuvring patients in wheelchairs or helping elderly/ infirm patients into and out of phlebotomy chairs and / or pushing phlebotomy trolleys.
  • Able to concentrate for long periods of time with good hand/ eye coordination skills.
  • Possess good handwriting and keyboard skills.

Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Able to deal with frequent exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions with daily exposure to blood and other body fluids.
  • Able to deal with exposure to verbal/physical aggression in a compassionate and sympathetic manner.

Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work accurately whilst remaining calm and with a professional manner.
  • Ability to request assistance to assess the suitability of veins for venepuncture and decision on whether a particular sample is of the quality required for analysis.

Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Be able to understand how to communicate and reassure patients in an empathetic and supportive manner referring to more senior phlebotomists as necessary.
