Job overview

The Intermediate Care and Discharge to Assess Beds Team  has vacancies for 2  full-time Band 6 Occupational Therapists.  We would be happy to consider part-time hours. You would be joining a supportive team of qualified therapists and therapy support workers to provide senior clinical leadership to deliver quality care to our Intermediate Care Rehabilitation Beds and Discharge to Assess Beds in care homes in and around  the East & North Hertfordshire area.

You will be based at Queen Victoria Memorial (QVM) Hospital in Welwyn, Hertfordshire. The post will involve travelling between care homes within East & North Hertfordshire including, Stevenage, Hatfield & Broxbourne. Depending on service demand, the IMC/D2A team intermittently will support the therapy teams at HCT's 3 rehabilitation in-patient units (Herts & Essex Hospital, QVM and Danesbury).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will deliver a complex package of high quality healthcare including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and advice to patients with various needs – including orthopaedics, care of the elderly and neurology.

The post holder will provide expert advice, guidance and information to health and social care professionals, carers, and relatives.

The post holder will deputise for the Lead Therapist as necessary

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To undertake a significant clinical caseload to a high professional standard, using specialist knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical experience

To be responsible for the supervision, education and assessment of junior staff, technical instructors and students

To hold clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time, working without direct supervision. 

To act as a Champion for specific service areas (e.g. Falls, Dementia etc) attending meetings and training as required, as part of the team's service delivery.

To lead the therapy team’s in-service training programme in conjunction with the other Band 6 therapists.

To actively participate in the education of occupational therapy students and work experience students.

To ensure that own clinical practice and that of line-managed staff meet the required professional standards for physiotherapy practice

Person specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Occupational Therapy degree
  • HCPC registration
  • Experience of working with patients in the delivery of rehabilitation packages or in a rehab setting at Band 5 level
  • Documented evidence of professional development and reflective practice in relevant aspects of Occupational Therapy e.g. attendance at in-service training sessions, reflective practice
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at relevant post-graduate training courses e.g. Dementia, elderly care, frailty etc.

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability and experience of carrying out a comprehensive occupational therapy assessment to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan and goals
  • Knowledge and experience of using a wide range of therapeutic occupational therapy interventions for the treatment of patients with complex conditions.
  • Knowledge and experience of using a range of recognised outcome measures and goal setting skills as appropriate to the rehabilitation of patients with a range of conditions.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Therapy models of practice
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervising and appraising other staff
  • Experience of supervising student occupational therapists
  • Involvement in service development and audits
  • Experience of working in the NHS within the community setting/ care homes

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate complex and/or sensitive information requiring empathy and reassurance
  • Ability to present information accurately, written and oral, in English
  • Ability to perform specialist hands-on therapeutic interventions and moving and handling techniques
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical problem solving ability in complex cases
  • Able to facilitate self management behaviour-change skills in patients

  • Hold a full, valid, UK driving licence and have access to a car to use for business purposes (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010)
