Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a 7 month fixed term Band 6 physiotherapist in our Medical team.
The team covers specialist medical and general medical wards, and is fully integrated between Physio and Occupational Therapy with an element of upskilling.
This post would provide an ideal first step into a Band 6 post, or an established Band 6 looking for a short term change of scenery!
The role comprises assessment and discharge planning, with skills in prioritising and managing in a fast paced ward setting. Sound clinical reasoning is required and managing a caseload on your own ward. Senior Band 7 support is available in the team on a daily basis.
The department offers regular in-service training programmes and other clinical development to support you in the post.
The fixed term is for 7 months at full time hours, Monday to Friday. The post will include weekend working on a 1:6 basis. Being part of the Respiratory on call overnight will also be required.
Internal secondment opportunities will be considered.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will need to:
Be able to provide specialist assessment and individualised treatment for stroke patients with complex needs, provide expert advice and signposting, and reasoned & collaborative discharge plans and act as an autonomous practitioner.
Be confident in MDT communication, and able to coordinate, discuss and communicate discharge plans with all MDT members.
Hold responsibility for own caseload, time management, note keeping and compliance with completing team audits and KPI’s, working without direct supervision.
Work as a team member allocating and prioritising workloads for self and others, being flexible and adapting to changing priorities throughout the day and managing these with support of other team members through supervisions and clinical reasoning.
Supporting junior staff members and non qualified staff in their clinical reasoning, caseloads and supervisions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies. Use advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis, recognising that this will take place in a ward or home setting.
To be responsible for the teaching, supervision and co-ordination of more junior physiotherapists, students (when present), assistants, technical instructors, and clerical staff and on a daily basis. Undertake the rotational appraisal of these staff groups.
To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in the reviewing and updating as appropriate.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy or equivalent recognised by Health Care Professionals Council.
- Physiotherapy degree qualification or equivalent.
- Documented evidence of Continued Professional Development of expanded specialist skills.
Desirable criteria
- Attendance at post graduate courses in relevant fields.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Understanding of Physiotherapy structure in NHS
- Standards – Health Care Professions Council/ Chartered Society of Physiotherapy/ Local.
- Policies and Procedures (local e.g. Health and Safety).
- Ability to search and review evidence base.
- Understanding of clinical governance and the implications for the service.
- Evidence of written projects/audit.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical problem-solving ability.
- NHS experience.
- Skill in physiotherapeutic techniques. Highly developed physical skills, dexterity, coordination and sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
- Willing to participate in emergency/on call duties.
- Ability to assess patient conditions establish a diagnosis and formulate a specialised treatment plan, from a range of modalities.
Desirable criteria
- Experience as a Band 5 Physiotherapist in a broad rotational post.
- Acute/Community.
- Respiratory on-call/emergency experience.
