Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic technician who wants to work in dispensary management.

The candidate needs to demonstrate strong leadership, personal and motivational skills. They need to be able to work as part of a team to continue to meet the high quality of patient care we strive to provide.

The Dispensary can be challenging but offers a warm friendly atmosphere making it enjoyable.

The hours for this post are:

Monday to Friday 8.45am – 5.15pm 60 minutes lunch) and you will be required to participate bank holiday and weekend rotas.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work closely with the Dispensary Management team to ensure the smooth running of the Dispensary at Watford General Hospital.

The main duties are:

The day-to-day management of the dispensary

To assist with the development and implementation of dispensary services

To make clinical ward visits

To assist with the training and development of all staff what work in the dispensary

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The purpose of this post is to:

  • To supervise the day to day management of the dispensary, including the organisation of workload and supervision of staff
  • To be involved with the development and implementation of pharmacy objectives relating to dispensary services
  • To help facilitate smooth and timely supply of medicines for discharge, inpatients and outpatients
  • To provide a safe, efficient and patient-focused pharmacy service to all users
  • To dispense and check prescriptions efficiently and safety
  • To ensure that services are provided according to all relevant and up to date procedures and standards
  • To participate in the weekend and Bank Holiday rota based at Watford and work cross site when needed

Person specification

Education and qualifications:

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Pharmacy Service
  • BTEC or equivalent in Pharmaceutical Science (underpinning knowledge)
  • Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain
  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice
  • Accredited Checking Technician qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Member of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians (APTUK)
  • Medicines Management qualification
  • Educational supervisor for PTPT

Knowledge:

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of all regulations and legislation relevant to Pharmacy Services
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy computer systems
  • Good working knowledge of pharmacy procedures and practice
  • Current knowledge of hospital pharmacy practice
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety including COSHH regulations
  • Basic knowledge of clinical pharmacy
Desirable criteria
  • Procedures and how to apply them consistently and effectively
  • Knowledge of Recruitment, selection and appraisals

Experience:

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post registration experience in a hospital Pharmacy Dispensary
  • Relevant experience in a supervisory capacity in a hospital pharmacy or a related area
  • Experience of training, mentoring, and assessing staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
