Community Perinatal Parent Infant Practitioner / Nursery Nurse

Hertfordshire Community Perinatal Team (CPT)

Band 4, 30 hours per week , fixed term maternity cover

0.8 post covering the west of the county

 An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled Community Nursery  Nurse with a special interest in perinatal mental health to join the team for a 9 month fixed term post and take a role in shaping development in this thriving, supportive and well-regarded specialist multi-disciplinary team. 

 

The team serves the county of Hertfordshire, supporting women with mental health needs, through pregnancy and the postnatal period as well as working closely with maternity staff and providers of primary, secondary and inpatient care.

 

About you: are you a creative, reflective and flexible Nursery Nurse with a passion for working with women, infants and families in the perinatal period? Are you committed to delivering personalised and meaningful care?

As a Band 4 Parent infant Practitioner / Community Nursery Nurse you will be an active member of a skilled multi-disciplinary team. You will be working together with your colleagues to provide tailored interventions in the critical perinatal period in our county-wide service. This means you’ll travel less and work out in the community directly delivering care in people’s homes and the local community; whilst receiving specialist supervision and support from our Senior Parent-Infant Therapist.

·       To work within an extensive multi professional team in a community perinatal mental health setting specialising in the treatment of pregnant women and mothers with babies up to 2 years old.

 

·       To support parents and other staff members in the team to ensure the emotional and practical care of the baby and to monitor developmental progress.

·       To collaborate with parents to devise an agreed plan of care for baby

·       To work autonomously in the community managing own caseload and prioritising work.

·       To document and communicate this effectively within the multi professional team.

·       To work with parents in a supportive role to aid them in their journey to recovery.

·       To communicate sensitively with parents and professionals in what can be challenging situations.

·       To aid many different professionals in their thinking and decision making around the needs of the baby.

 

·       To work autonomously in the community managing own caseload and prioritising work.

Working relationships

 

  • To work closely with team colleagues involved in the care of the mother and baby communicating relevant information in a timely way.
  • To liaise closely with external agencies involved with the mother and baby eg health visitors ensuring timely sharing of information where relevant and a consistent approach to care.
  • Build and develop good working relationships with children’s centres,
  • To treat mothers with respect and sensitivity at all times using suitable communication skills to support women to manage their role caring for their baby in the context of managing the symptoms of mental ill health.  

 

  • Communication Requirements Be skilled at adapting language and professional approach to a varied client group

 

  • To act at all times in safeguarding the integrity, confidentiality and availability of sensitive information relating to mothers and staff

 

  • To demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills in a wide range of situations in the community and to be able to represent the Community Perinatal Team to external agencies.

 

  • To promote the Community Perinatal Team to external colleagues eg Midwives through various activities including teaching and presenting.

 

 

  • To promote effective flow of communication among all relevant parties.

 

 

 

Clinical Responsibility

 

  • To support women with perinatal mental health needs to build their relationship with their baby both ante-natally and post-natally through the use of evidence-based interventions.
  • Carry out home visits to selected families to teach play skills and promote early learning through demonstration and shared activities
  • To support families to build understanding in child development and how to support this in their own families.
  • To support women with advice on breastfeeding and bottle feeding both ante- and post- natally.
  • Support families in relation to starting solids, infant and toddler nutrition.
  • To promote community resources suitable for the needs of families.
  • To recognise and promote all aspects of culture diversity, devising baby care plans that respond positively to ethnic awareness with sensitivity
  • To participate in teaching in community based groups demonstrating skilled communication and ability to identify the needs of those attending
  • To use appropriate standardised assessments and evidence-based interventions in line with the Perinatal Parent-Infant Pathway.

  • To have the knowledge and ability to manage change in a positive way.

 

  • To act as a positive role model to the multi-disciplinary team, mothers, fathers, co-parents and Health Visitors and staff.

 

  • To have the ability to provide effective support to mothers, fathers, co-parents and wider families and carers of babies and toddlers under 2 years.

 

  • To support colleagues and the wider team at times of increased service demand taking a flexible approach and responsibility for delegated tasks.

  • To assist the team in the effective use of resources at all time

  • To comply with the Trust’s requirement to attend all relevant mandatory training

 

  • To  engage in and support in-service training for the multidisciplinary team through active participation including providing teaching sessions on topics relevant to the role

  • To ensure clinical skills relative to the delivery of care in the team as agreed and monitored within the Trust’s supervisory framework

 

  • To recognise own limitations in skill and level of authority.

·       To be able to drive across the county to independently carry out home visits

 

·       To be physically fit and able to successfully complete a prevention and management of aggression training course and annual refresher

 

·       To have the skills and confidence to manage mothers who may exhibit challenging behaviour at times due to their mental ill health.

  • NNEB – National Nursery Education Board -qualification
  • BTEC (National Diploma in Nursery Nursing)or equivalent such as NVQ level3 (child care and education)
  • Understanding of childcare and development. Up to date awareness of recent research and guidance on child development
  • A comprehensive working knowledge of legislation and national directives/policies relating to children
  • Well developed knowledge of each individual responsibility in safeguarding infants
  • Ability to plan, provide and participate in suitable activities for parents and babies
  • Ability to work as 37.5hour week and be flexible within working pattern.
