Job overview

We are recruiting for a Clinical Nurse Specialist – Haemodialysis who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients. 

East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust is home to one of the UK’s largest renal & haemodialysis unit programmes, offering nurses the unique opportunity to work across a wide variety of clinical specialities and to advance their professional development.

The post holder is a recognised expert in the speciality, responsible for assessing, developing, and implementing specialist nursing care programs and undertaking specialist nursing procedures responsible for providing specialist advice and support to, and liaising with, other staff. This includes the provision of specialist education and training for other staff and students responsible for implementing a clearly defined integrated approach to patient care encompassing new treatments and evidence-based care. Required to undertake research and lead clinical audits in own specialist area.

Main duties of the job

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist you will be assessing individual patient care needs, medications.

Develop, implement, and evaluate clinical management plans of care for a group of patients dialysing in centre or at our satellite units in accordance with agreed policies and professional guidelines. 

In the absence of senior staff, taking responsibility for the delegation and supervision of appropriate work to other qualified staff, healthcare support workers and students.

Qualifications / Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse educated to Degree level or willingness to undertake
  • Post registration qualification in renal specialty.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Advanced clinical assessment.
  • Non-medical prescribing.
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification.

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in caring for patients requiring hemodialysis treatment.
  • Ability to act on own initiative with evidence of sound decision making abilities.
  • Involvement in audit/research and willingness to present findings at meetings and conferences.
  • Knowledge in quality assurance of patient dialysis treatment.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Physiological assessment of acutely unwell patients.
  • Ability to communicate effectively – excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage potentially difficult situations
  • Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate interventions and/or treatments.
  • Ability to develop own skills and knowledge.
  • Demonstrate a flexible approach, able to react to the changing needs of the department.
  • Ability to liaise and work with the multidisciplinary team, making recommendations to enhance the smooth running and management of the unit.
  • Ability to manage self and others in delivery of own work and related clinical outcomes to meet department expectations.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Patient focused – committed to ensuring a positive hospital experience for patients and the relatives/carers.
  • Awareness of professional boundaries.
  • Understanding of critical care.
  • Ability to support and mentor learners.
  • Understanding of risk management, health and safety and other clinical governance issues.
  • Knowledge of local and national health care initiatives/innovation to improve patient care, experience and safety.
