Job overview

We are recruiting for a Nurse Team Leader who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

Our local neonatal unit consists of 28 cots, 10 of which are designated to ITU/HDU 18 special care. Within our service we manage a 6 bedded Transitional Care area, located on the Post-natal ward, where mothers can remain with their babies up until they are discharged.

We also provide a well-established and highly regarded Neonatal Outreach Service which facilitates the early discharge of babies safely into the community.

Our progressive level 2 unit is currently working towards UNICEF Baby  Friendly Initiative accreditation Stage 2 and the Bliss Baby Charter Gold Standard.

Main duties of the job

You will participate as a member of the neonatal multi-disciplinary team providing evidence based family centred care.

You will be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision – undertaking care in the most appropriate environment using a high level of technical expertise.

Skilled in communicating effectively with parents, families and members of the multidisciplinary team.

Keep accurate and complete records of activities and communications consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.

In this role you will be designated to take charge regularly of the neonatal unit in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility. Providing professional and leadership support.

Participate in the teaching and supervision of junior staff and students. Actively promotes educational development within the unit and service.

Participate in internal rotation duties, providing 24 hour nursing cover.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • RN/RM/RSCN with neonatal intensive care experience and neonatal professional qualification.
  • Achieved full KSF Outline for Band 5
  • Intravenous accreditation
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Degree qualification
  • Management/leadership course
  • Assessing and mentoring qualification
  • NLS provider course

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience of intensive and high dependency neonatal nursing reflecting evidence based practice.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of change management
  • Interest in teaching and supervising of students and junior staff
Desirable criteria
  • Previous ward management experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to assess, plan, evaluate nursing care.
  • Competent in the care management of sick infants
  • Ability to manage own case load
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to plan and prioritise work
  • Ability to work well in both a team and lead a team
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in audits
  • Good IT Skills

Knowledge

  • An understanding of the philosophies of current issues in neonatal nursing.
