Job overview

We are recruiting for a  Senior Rotational Pharmacy Assistant who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

The successful candidate will act as first point of contact and  respond to enquiries from Trust staff and external suppliers, dealing with queries by email and over the telephone promptly and efficiently, referring onto the appropriate member of staff where necessary.

You will be responsible to accurately dispense and issue prescriptions and drug charts under the supervision of a pharmacist or accredited checking technician. In addition, they will be supporting pharmacists and technicians in providing a high quality pharmaceutical services within the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (MVCC) including stock management duties and dispensing ready-to-use (RTU) dose banded systemic anticancer treatment. You will also support the senior technician in the planning and dispensing SACT treatment.

Please note : Experience of working in a pharmaceutical related or hospital environment is essential. The applicant must possess an NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy services.

Main duties of the job

Accurately dispense inpatients, discharge and dose banding systemic anti-cancer treatment accurately. Prescription types will include inpatients, discharges, controlled drugs and ready to use (RTU) treatment.

To maintain accurate stock control including daily stock checks, expiry date checks and to investigate stock level discrepancies in line with current procedures.

To be able to oversee storage, archive and removal of paperwork kept for legal requirements in the department.

To ensure that the correct goods and the correct quantities are received against the corresponding order.

To answer the telephones and deal with enquiries where appropriate, take messages or refer to a more appropriate member of staff.

To contribute to the safe disposal of waste within the department.

To be able to follow standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

To operate pharmacy computer software daily.

ENHT is seeking to maintain and expand the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre staff as we move to an exciting new future.

In addition, you will receive a High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of your basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £4,314 and a maximum payment of £5,436 per annum pro rata.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • GCSE level (Grade A-C in English and Maths) or Numeracy and Literacy functional skills level 2 (or equivalent).
  • NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience
  • Numeracy and literacy to a good standard
Desirable criteria
  • Level 2 NVQ certificate in Pharmacy Service Skills (dispensing unit) equivalent

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of working in a pharmacy services environment
  • Previous customer service experience such speaking on the phone and talking face to face
Desirable criteria
  • Previous hospital pharmacy experience
  • Previous experience with Wellsky (JAC) pharmacy computer system
  • Experience and understanding of working within standard operating procedures

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of the public and with other health care professionals.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with staff at all levels
  • Time management / Organisational / Problem solving skills; ability to priorities own workload and that of others and to manage own time effectively.
  • Computer skills: ability to use Microsoft Office applications eg Word, Excel, Outlook
Desirable criteria
  • Training Skills: ability to train/coach/teach tasks to other assistants
  • Customer services training
  • Experience of investigating queries, taking appropriate action, liaising with technicians and pharmacists as necessary

  • Adaptable and flexible, to be able to adapt to changes for example in procedures and practices
