This  part time role (0.6 WTE) is for a Principal Art Psychotherapist working with adults with a learning disability in the community. This post is within a long established  Arts Therapies Department based in Colchester, Essex which is an integral part of the wider learning disability team. The post holder will hold an active caseload as well as taking a lead on  professional issues in relation to art psychotherapy in conjunction with the Head of Arts Therapies. This post is well supported in terms of space, equipment, CPD opportunities, managerial, clinical and peer supervision as well as being a part of the trust wide arts therapies services.

The main duties and responsibilities of this post are: 

responsibility for a caseload, offering both individual and group art psychotherapy in two different community locations. This may include in patient work where appropriate.

providing  professional leadership regarding art psychotherapy, working alongside the Head of Arts Therapies

providing clinical supervision when requested and appropriate

being an integral member of the Arts Therapies Team,  assisting with allocations, service development,  governance issues, communication and liaison with the MDT and IDT teams.

The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic, passionate and dedicated  arts therapies team consisting of a Head of Arts Therapies (music therapist), 1 other music therapist, 2 art psychotherapists (3 including this post) and 1 dramatherapist.  Our main base is in Colchester, Essex where we have access to two dedicated arts therapies rooms and an office space.  Each member of the team works on a Monday when we hold regular peer supervision sessions, team meetings, allocations meetings, other therapy related meetings and discussions as well supportive conversations around the 'kettle'.   The Team  offers trainee placements when circumstances allow as well as opportunities for professional development. In addition to the department being professionally and operationally managed by the Head of Arts Therapies, we also benefit from having a  Learning Disability AHP lead as well as a Trust AHP lead  and good working relationships with the other arts therapies across the different Trust Services. The successful applicant will join a Team that holds and demonstrates the overall Trust values of 'welcoming, kind, positive, respectful and professional' everyday and in all that they do for the Service Users referred to the Department.

JOB SUMMARY: Working as an autonomous clinical specialist within a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), the Post Holder (PH) will have expertise in providing psychotherapeutically informed assessment and intervention to Service Users who have learning disabilities, history of trauma, behaviours of concern and/or dual diagnosis (i.e. Mental Health and Learning Disability), and who may be detained under the Mental Health Act. To provide professional leadership to other art psychotherapists in the Essex Learning Disability Partnership (North Essex) and clinical supervision within the arts therapies Trust wide when requested and appropriate.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To plan, assess, implement and evaluate individual and group art psychotherapy for adults with learning disabilities and/or dual diagnosis referred to the Service within the geographical area of the Trust, including when necessary in-patient services.
  • To provide physical safety and confidentiality conducive to effective art psychotherapy practice.
  • To practice highly specialist assessment and treatment skills, with an emphasis on creativity, adaptability and psychotherapeutic understanding from clinical training and practice.
  • To act as principal Art Psychotherapist for the Arts Therapies Department, Essex. Providing information and recommendations on clinical and professional issues relating to Art Therapy.
  • To develop Art Psychotherapy within the Arts Therapies Service, and the Learning Disabilities & Forensics Division in conjunction with the HOD.
  • To maintain professional standards at all times and to abide by the Code of Ethics as set out by the Health & Care Professionals Council.
  • To receive Clinical Supervision in accordance with Professional Code of Practice. To provide clinical and placement supervision to MA Art Therapy students who are on placement with LD & Forensics, North Essex, Hertfordshire Partnership University Foundation Trust.
  • To plan and provide Arts Therapies Department seminars and workshops to the MDT within the Service.
  • To communicate and develop an effective working relationship with the Area Management Team (AMT) Manager and Team Leader, as appropriate.
  • To be responsible for completing, implementing and adhering to risk assessments relating to Art Therapy practice.

Qualifications and experience

  • • Good honours degree in art or related subject
  • • State Registered Art Therapist/Psychotherapist (HCPC)
  • • MA or equivalent in Art Therapy.
  • • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development in a specialist area.
  • • A high level of clinical skill backed by experience of clinical work with individuals and groups, of which at least 2 years should have been with adults with learning disabilities in an NHS setting.
  • • Experience of supervising MA Art Therapy students. and Experience of supervising qualified art psychotherapists.
  • • Proven experience of working at a strategic level within an organization and can demonstrate a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
  • • Application of advanced knowledge in art therapy assessment and evaluation.

  • • Other related academic and specialist training/qualifications.
  • • Member of British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT).
  • • Experience of presenting own clinical work via seminar, paper, peer-reviewed journal.
  • • Experience of in-patient setting.
  • • Art Therapy experience of other client groups within an NHS setting
  • • Knowledge and experience of research methodology and as a research practitioner.
