NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Are you looking to improve your work-life balance? Herefordshire offers the perfect combination of the convenience of city living and spectacular countryside with the time off to enjoy it all!

Wye Valley NHS Trust’s Department of Paediatrics is seeking to recruit a  General Paediatric Consultant to join our team of 12 consultants, to help us continue to provide a sustainable consultant-delivered service to the children of Herefordshire. The department offers first class paediatric medicine with a supportive friendly team and delivers a comprehensive range of services. A good general Paediatric and Neonatal background is the priority and practical skills are essential. All consultants are resident on call at night with tier 1 doctor and daytime activity is adjusted  thus providing time off during the week. Job plans can be adjusted to offer days off in the week which support individual requests for particular days off within the working week. Resident consultant-delivered care operates successfully in our department and we have excellent consultant staff retention. Evening and weekend cover is well supported with middle grades working until 9.30pm.

Closing  Date:  17th February 2025

Interview Date:  March 2025, date to be confirmed.

Main duties of the job

General Paediatric Consultant (Endocrinology and Diabetes)

A good general Paediatric and Neonatal background is the priority and practical skills are essential. Other special interests to complement the team are welcomed and the opportunity exists for on-the-job development of special interests.

To enable the delivery of this style of care consultants are resident on call at night. Evening and weekend resident cover is supported by the three middle grade doctors. The resident nature of the on call provides for substantial time off during the week because daytime activity is adjusted accordingly - detailed in the example work schedule below.

Working for our organisation

Wye Valley NHS Trust is a member of an NHS Foundation Group with South Warwickshire NHS FT , the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust and Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Located on the border with Wales in the shadow of the Black Mountains, we provide acute and community services across Herefordshire and into parts of Powys and run Hereford County Hospital and the community hospitals in Bromyard, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye.

Worcestershire is our neighbouring county. The post holder will be required to travel between sites.

More than 3,500 people work for the Trust - they tell us it's a great place to work, blending the busyness of a DGH with the benefits of working in a beautiful rural and unspoilt county like Herefordshire.

We can offer a great work-life balance and have a fine tradition of working with staff to help them achieve their full potential.

Russell Hardy, Trust Chairman: "The strength of the Trust is its amazing staff; a great place to work, a great place to develop your career and a great place to reach your potential."

Our values -Care, Accountability, Respect and Excellence - are at the heart of all we do. We believe in providing the right care in the right place at the right time...all the time
