We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated full time Consultant with a Specialist Interest in Older Person’s Medicine, who is keen to support in enhancing and developing our front door services and other pathways.
We cover 70 inpatient beds across three wards for older patients. We also run weekly rapid access frailty clinics and Parkinson’s clinics. The Frailty Intervention Team works across the Emergency Department and
Acute Assessment Unit screening older patients for frailty and completing Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments, and we are working towards opening a frailty Same Day Emergency Care later this year.
The department has a positive multidisciplinary team culture, with a Consultant Nurse, Frailty Pharmacist and Frailty Intervention Team working alongside the Consultants. The department has strong relationships with primary care and the community, providing a weekday advice line, virtual MDTs and a telemedicine service operates to support care home residents.
We currently run a non-medical frailty intervention team, (FIT) working across the week, across both sites, Basingstoke, and Winchester to aid admission avoidance and increase timely discharges. The trust is now developing its community pathways and same day emergency care, virtual health, and hospital at home services. We therefore believe this is an exciting time to join our team.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for applicants with a wide experience in Medicine who also have excellent team- working skills with the abilities and professional skills to lead service developments in the Trust. We are keen to promote education and learning and provide a good educational experience to trainees. We would welcome those with teaching skills and help support applications for honorary teaching posts at our associated medical school.
The successful candidate will lead a team of junior doctors, advanced care practitioners and multi-disciplinary staff in providing comprehensive medical care for their inpatients, clinic patients and emergency admissions. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be committed to delivering clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with the clinical teams and commissioners.
We support flexible working patterns. Additional commitments are as follows; On-call commitments are on the acute medicine rota. They currently involve a medical admitting take approximately 1:20 (Additional 2Pas for on-call duties). There is a weekend ward rota approximately 1:12 for morning ward round seeing targeted patients on the medical wards with time off in lieu. This might be negotiable for applicants who are not currently practising GIM.

The Trust covers a population of 600,000 incorporating Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospitals (BNHH), Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH) in Winchester, Andover War Memorial Hospital (AWMH) and community hospitals. We provide one hospital service across multiple localities, delivering services as close as possible to the patient. BNHH and RHCH are 23 miles apart, situated in the middle of the M3 corridor, with excellent transport links to London and the south coast.

The applicant should hold a CCT in General Internal Medicine or Geriatric Medicine or be within 6 months of completion. Please ensure that start and end dates of training courses and employment are clearly noted on your application form / CV.

Professional Qualification

- MBBS or equivalent
- Licence to practice and full registration with GMC

Desirable criteria
- Post graduate degree (MSc/PhD)

Clinical Experience & Knowledge

- At least 6 months prior UK experience at middle grade / registrar level in one or more a medical specialties

- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of service improvement
