Main duties of the job
This one year fellowship, beginning in August 2025, in cardiac imaging provides extensive experience in all aspects of advanced echocardiography in a cardiothoracic centre with the additional opportunity for training in cardiac MRI/cardiac CT. There is a requirement for general cardiology on call but no requirement for general medical on call.
The successful candidate will join a busy BSE accredited department of 3 consultant cardiologists and 38 cardiac physiologists who specialise in echocardiography. UHS cardiology is a tertiary referral centre which provides an opportunity for exposure to a wide range of pathology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
University Hospital Southampton is seeking a Clinical Fellow in Cardiac Imaging to commence in August 2024 for 12 months. The post holder is expected to participate in the service provision for echocardiography and support specialist echo services including stress, transoesophageal, research, contrast and 3D echocardiography. A weekly session in cardiac MRI is provided for the Imaging Fellow and sessions in cardiac CT may also be accommodated depending on the interests of the post holder. This post will suit a senior or a Post-CCT cardiology SpR who plans to specialise in non-invasive cardiac imaging. Previous experience in cardiac imaging is essential. The post has a requirement for general cardiology on-call but no commitment to GIM on call.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
All candidates should have MRCP or an equivalent qualification. Candidates should have experience in transoesophageal and stress echocardiography. They should be sufficiently equipped to manage a cardiology take. The candidate should be able to communicate well with colleagues, cardiac physiologists and other subspecialties.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.
Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.
Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)
Basic Salary – MT04 £61,825 Basic Salary – MT05 £70,425
Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;
- Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
- Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
- A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.

Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practice
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- MRCP or equivalent
- Experience in managing general cardiology patients and cardiological emergencies
Desirable criteria
- Accreditation in transthoracic echocardiography
- Experience of stress echocardiography
- Experience of transoesophageal echocardiography
- Sub-specialty experience in the field of Cardiac Imaging to complement the needs of the department
