Main duties of the job

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Senior Nurse / Senior Operating Department Practitioner to join our leadership team to lead and further develop our UHS Operating and perioperative medicine department. Able to demonstrate key attributes of compassion and empathy, integrity, a critical thinker, who is collaborative and evidence of team building, is dedicated to excellence, and is open minded. 

We have recently expanded our theatre capacity and are in the progress of commencing our second phase of expansion. The current service is a cross site facility at Southampton and Lymington, involving the UHS services of peri operative medicine, pre-operative assessment, the Surgical Day Unit, 35 Operating Rooms and 7 Recovery areas. The multiple specialties include General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT/ OMF, Cardiac and Neuro. We also support services external to the theatre department including interventional radiology, CT, MRI, A&E trauma response. We are developing our Robotic service and exploring advanced roles in recovery, anaesthetic practitioner, and scrub.

We are a major trauma centre and support 24-hour emergency care. You will be part of a nursing / ODP leadership team, leading and supporting a team of 700 WTE staff, supporting pioneering emergency and elective surgical pathways of care with an excellent national and international reputation.

This is a full-time permanent post with the option of a fixed-term role for the successful candidate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work closely with the team of Matrons, the Care Group Manager and Divisional Head of Nursing and Professions to ensure our patients and staff are our top priority and will influence practice by working amongst the operational and clinical teams.

As a provider of UHS theatre services, our focus and aim is to improve further and transform, to deliver an effective, responsive and efficient service for our surgical services to utilise 24/7. You will have the relevant qualifications and experience to provide pioneering solid leadership to the theatre team, creating an environment which is always proud of the care they provide to all. 

Your leadership will guarantee the delivery of high-quality care, working within the framework of the Modern Matron principles; your key role will be to ensure clinical quality standards are achieved consistently by providing inspirational and visible clinical leadership and supporting the assurance of the delivery of a contemporary, high-quality evidence-based patient care. Working with other Matron colleagues and other key staff in the Division and across the Trust, as the custodian of the patient experience, you will ensure patients, staff and the Trust have confidence in your areas of responsibility. 

You will require a high level of organisational skills and have a resourceful and professional approach to work. You should be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and can forge and maintain relationships with a variety of clinical and non-clinical staff.
