Main duties of the job
The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at University Hospital Southampton is looking for a housekeeper to join the team.
AMU is a very busy 54 bedded unit spread across five areas. We admit patients directly from the emergency department, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) or GP, at their most unwell phase at any time of the day or night. We aim to treat our patients and either discharge them home within 48hrs of admission, or to move to a speciality ward within this time. This means no two days will be the same and our patients are always changing.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidate will work as an integral part of the housekeeping team of six and the larger nursing team. You will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the ward; ensuring that our patients are always comfortable in the hospital environment.
The role will involve ensuring the ward is tidy, cleaning of general and specialist medical equipment such as defibrillators, moving and handling equipment such as hoists and our nurse workstations. You will also be required to tidy the patient bed areas, clean beds when patients leave and general environmental cleaning. We also expect you to support the nursing staff to oversee food and drink service. Experience in a hospital setting is not essential as full training is provided.
Our housekeeping team cover AMU across seven days per week either working a 07:00-19:00 or 09:00-21:00 shifts. You will be expected to work across both shifts.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for an individual who has a flexible and responsive approach to their working day. Someone who has excellent patient care and service at their heart, who is motivated to support the clinical staff to assist in a smooth and efficient service for our patients.
We need you to be able to chat to our patients, to take direction from our nursing staff and to work on your own initiative to help AMU run smoothly. You will need to be able to adapt in any situation and have a good attention to detail.
Our housekeeping team is key to our patients and their experience, and we want you to help us achieve this.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
- Basic Food Hygiene Certificate or willingness to work towards
- Customer Service experience
- Demonstrate ability to work autonomously
Desirable criteria
- Previous Housekeeping experience
- Knowledge of, or training in, manual handling techniques
- Understanding of, or training in, COSHH
