Blood Transfusion at UHS is looking for a qualified Nurse with acute nursing experience in an area of high blood usage to join our expanding multi-disciplinary Transfusion Practitioner team.  Working as part of a supportive team, you will help clinical staff of all levels to maintain safe and effective clinical transfusion practice throughout UHS.  

As well as developing your skills and knowledge around blood transfusion, you will be supported to play a role in reviewing and improving clinical practice and patient care, primarily within UHS but also through collaboration with colleagues at other trusts throughout the South-East region.

You will also work closely with the wider Blood Transfusion Laboratory team and others within the Pathology department to assist with the effective running of the transfusion service.

The main focus of the role is on daily operational duties, including responding to phone and email queries coming in from clinical staff, patients and others.  Undertaking ward-based audits of transfusion practice, investigating adverse reactions and events and investigating failures in the traceability of blood components and products will all be required.  In order to demonstrate adherence to national guidelines and regulations, thorough reporting and recording of such events is essential.

You should be able to demonstrate experience of teaching and supporting learners in practice as you will have the opportunity to deliver and help shape the education of all staff involved in the transfusion process.  

A collaborative approach and strong interpersonal skills are essential to help foster a close working relationship between staff working in the laboratory and those involved in direct patient care.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • NMC Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Significant acute nursing experience in area of high blood usage
  • IT competency (Microsoft, Outlook, hospital IT systems)
  • Provide evidence of teaching and supporting learners in practice in the role of practice supervisor

  • BBTS Clinical Transfusion Practice or equivalent
  • Experience of teaching and supporting colleagues and/or students with learning
