Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for the post of Neonatal Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4+) to start immediately and run for 6-12months in the first instance.

 We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our busy Tertiary Level Neonatal Care team.

 The UHS Neonatal Service based at the Princess Anne Hospital offers the full range of Neonatal Intensive Care facilities including neonatal surgery and cardiac services

·       UHS also hosts the Network Neonatal Transport Service (SONeT).

·       There are approximately 6000 deliveries per year in the hospital and many of these are ‘High risk’ deliveries referred to the tertiary UHS Fetal Medicine service within Princess Anne Hospital.

·       The NICU has 37 cots: 24 Intensive and High Care and 14 Special Care cots. This is soon to increase to 42 cots as part of a neonatal expansion.

·       UHS is a lead centre within the Wessex Neonatal ODN Network and provides the full range of sub speciality services and referrals for specialist care are received from surrounding hospitals within the Network.

·       We run a 24 hours a day 7 days a week service and all our doctors work shifts to cover the whole period.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

 WHAT YOU’LL DO

This is a clinical post designed to provide training, which would be suitable for middle grade doctors (ST4 and above or equivalent), including trainees considering or currently undertaking Neonatal Grid subspecialty training and also those with a CCT who wish to gain additional research and clinical experience.

You will be dedicated to providing middle grade clinical service for the regional level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Princess Anne Hospital, University Hospital Southampton (there is no cross cover with paediatrics).

o    This will include Neonatal ICU ward work and procedures, supporting the regional transport service, special care cover and neonatal follow up clinics

o    You will be encouraged to take part in the wide range of educational and training opportunities within the department that is a recognised centre in the National Grid for Higher Specialist Training in Neonatology. While these posts are not recognised formally as training posts by the Wessex Deanery it is anticipated that the educational opportunities available will match those of our recognised training posts.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR 

·       Full GMC registration

·       MRCPCH or equivalent

·       Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience post graduation with MBBS

·       12 months tertiary neonatal experience, plus other relevant paediatric experience and a minimum of 6 months working in the UK

GGood communication skills 

 

                            

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

 Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

 Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

 Basic Salary – MT04  £61,825       Basic Salary – MT05 £70,425

 Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;

•             Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training  

•             Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)

•             A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)                 

 Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

 Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • UK GMC Registration
  • MBBS or Equivalent
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MSC / BSc (or other intercalated degree) other degrees / qualifications

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Fully qualified doctor with a minimum of 5 years’ experience post-graduation with a minimum of 12 months of tertiary level 3 neonatal (NICU) experience (including the management of extremely preterm infants at 24 weeks)
  • A minimum of 6 months experience working in the UK.
  • Undertaken an audit or quality improvement project relevant to neonatal medicine.
  • Interest or experience in research.

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
  • • Proven ability to manage acute emergencies.
  • • NLS/APLS Provider or equivalent.
  • • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of quality improvement projects / audits and evidence-based practice.
  • • Good insight into own abilities and experience
  • • Competence in practical procedures
  • • IT skills, including the use of spreadsheets and databases
  • • Ability to self-direct own learning and time (
  • • Ability to work with measure of independence and handle busy workload in a demanding environment
  • • Able to work well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable criteria
  • • Evidence of teaching involvement and planning of education for other members of the MDT.
  • • Evidence of relevant research achievement including involvement in research/audit projects and research publications or evidence of involvement in Quality improvement projects
