Main duties of the job

The ENT department at Southampton is a large unit serving the local population but is also a regional centre for subspecialist ENT services. 

The team has close links with respiratory medicine, allergy, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, OMF surgery to offer the full breadth of tertiary rhinology services.

UHS is looking to appoint an ENT surgeon with a specialist interest in rhinology on an initial locum basis with a view to a future substantive appointment.  An advanced rhinology fellowship is essential and there is also the opportunity to support and further develop the existing anterior skull base service run jointly with neurosurgery. The successful applicant will join a team of 14 ENT surgeons . In addition, the ENT team participate in the ENT surgical on-call rota and provide 24/7  ENT cover for UHS, Salisbury and Royal Hampshire County Hospitals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Your primary focus will be the outpatient and surgical management of ENT conditions, with a subspecialty interest in advanced rhinological surgery including support and development of the anterior skull base service. You will be a member of the ENT team at Southampton. The post is based at Southampton General hospital and in patients and main operating lists will be at Southampton. Clinical activity also takes place in a number of allied surrounding hospitals including the Royal South Hants Hospital.

Responsibilities include the management of in-patients, outpatient clinics, administration, teaching, educational and clinical supervision, service development, participation in the ENT on-call rota with is shared with, and covers, Winchester Hospital and Salisbury Hospital.

Applicants should be strongly motivated to work in a teaching hospital tertiary centre and should be prepared to take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, basic science research and clinical management. We also offer excellent personal development and research opportunities.

Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates should provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach the confirmation to your application. 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be either already on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC.

Person specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or equivalent (FRCS(ORL-HNS) or equivalent)
  • Higher Qualification in specialty
  • Advanced Rhinology Fellowship (anterior skull base surgery or facial plastics)
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Otolaryngology
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of sinonasal disorders
  • Wide experience in ENT
  • General ENT experience in Elective and Emergency outpatient and operative surgery
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Publications in per-reviewed journals
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate degree
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Substantive experience as a consultant surgeon
  • Prior academic experience in the field of rhinological research and clinical trials
  • Ability to support and further develop the existing UHS anterior skull base service
