Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Advanced Therapy Technician to join Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Emergency Department (ED) therapies team at University Hospital Southampton. The Emergency Department and Acute Medical Unit is a fast-paced environment requiring rapid assessment, treatment, and discharge, where possible, of a variety of patient presentations. We are seeking to appoint a dynamic, reliable, and flexible Therapy Technician who can work closely within our integrated therapy team and multidisciplinary teams.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will work as part of a team delivering a therapy service from 8am to 6pm across a 7-day service, including weekends and bank holidays, allocated on a roster basis. Staff within the team currently work a variety of hours and flexible working options can be discussed.
This post is part of the wider Therapy services department. You will have many opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge through our in-service training. You will be part of a large department of over 290wte Therapy staff including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy support staff.

This B4 advanced Therapy Technician post offers you the chance to work in a friendly, supportive MDT environment with a team committed to improving patient care and experience. You will work within the wider multi-disciplinary team across AMU and ED which consists of 90 beds in total. Patients present with a wide range of diagnoses and often have multiple pathologies and complex social situations. It is a fast-paced environment where effective communication, prioritisation, and teamwork are essential. Our focus is early assessment and complex discharge planning alongside the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists in the team.

This role will involve working in the well-established, proactive integrated therapy service across ED and AMU. The aims of this flexible and responsive service will be to provide prompt therapy assessments, implement frailty care pathways, facilitate appropriate discharges, admission avoidance, complex equipment needs, cognitive assessments alongside the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists across AMU and ED.

Essential Skills:
•    Experience of working in an acute clinical hospital setting or fast-paced clinical environment
•    Experience helping others with their personal care; washing, dressing and toileting needs.
•    Happy working alone, making decisions, as well as part of a wider team.
•    Good communicator (verbal and written)
•    Able to work flexibly over 7-days on a rota basis.
•    Clear desire for wanting to work at UHS given in your application form.
•    Clear desire for wanting to work in ED/AMU given in your application form.
•    Knowledge and understanding of NHS systems.

Desirable skills for this role:
•    Able to remain calm under pressure.
•    Knowledge of discharge options
•    Able to show initiative and to be a proactive member of the team.
