Job overview

 This is an exciting opportunity to join the friendly & supportive Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) team at Ysbyty Gwynedd. This post is particularly suitable for doctors experienced in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, who are looking for more experience aiming to enter specialist training or to support CESR, and who will provide clinical experience on the second on call tier. The post holder will be supported by, and work in conjunction with, the Consultants in O&G, working alongside the other second on call doctors, junior medical team and nursing & midwifery colleagues. There is on-call commitment on the second on call rota, so a minimum of 3 years O&G experience is required, with minimum 6 months clinical experience in the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The ability to work within a multidisciplinary team is essential. Applicants must be both flexible in their approach and be ready to meet the challenges presented by the evolving health service changes in North Wales. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all aspect of work including outpatient clinic sessions in obstetrics and gynaecology, labour ward and gynaecology operating theatre lists in addition to the on-call rota. The rota frequency and work pattern out of hours is reviewed on a regular basis and changes may be necessary in future to adapt to changes in the department.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) is the largest health organisation in Wales servicing a quarter of the population across Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham as well as some parts of mid Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire. It provides a full range of primary, community, mental and acute hospital services across 3 district hospitals, 22 community hospitals and a network of over 90 health centres, clinics, community health team bases and mental health units. The delivery rate at Ysbyty Gwynedd has remained relatively steady at around 2100 per annum over recent years. The Obstetrics Unit, alongside the Midwifery Led Unit, inpatient Maternity Ward, Special Care Baby Unit, Gynaecology Ward and the main operating theatre are located on the first floor of the hospital. There is a dedicated Obstetrics Theatre within the Labour Ward complex. Other facilities include a Maternity Outpatient Assessment Unit and Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. There are facilities for Hysteroscopy, Colposcopy, Smear Clinics and Urodynamics within the St David’s Outpatients Unit. Peripheral clinics are currently run in Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Holyhead Llangefni, Caernarfon, Pwllheli and Porthmadog. The North Wales Gynaecology Cancer Centre is based at Ysbyty Gwynedd with 3 gynaecology oncology surgeons. Gynaecology surgery is carried out in the Day Case Theatre as well as the Main Operating Theatre.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or equivalent qualification
  • MRCOG part 1
  • Should have at least six months of experience working as second on call in the UK.
Desirable criteria
  • ATSM in Labour Ward/Advance Antenatal practice/Benign gynaecology
  • GCP training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Competence in managing emergency Obstetrics and Gynaecology cases as second on call with non-resident consultant cover
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of participation in research activity including recruitment, consenting or laboratory based research

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Willingness and ability to work with minimal direct supervision
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrate ability to manage time effectively
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively eg. Report-writing, guidelines/protocols.

Academic

Essential criteria
  • Participation in Clinical audit/Quality Improvement activity
Desirable criteria
  • Publication in Peer Reviewed journals

Management

  • Understanding of NHS management structure.
