Job overview

The applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor (ST+3 equivalent) in Laparoscopic and Robotic Colorectal Surgery. The fellow will be working exclusively for a team of 4 Laparoscopic and Robotic Colorectal/ GI Surgeons. This opportunity is also available for experienced non-UK surgeons.

General and Colorectal Surgery department at Ysbyty Gwynedd is a well recognised training unit and works very closely with HEIW. This department is recognised for the IST programme and attracts 4 ST3 and 6 CTs a year. All Specialty doctors are offered training opportunities similar to HEIW trainees. In the past few of our doctors  have used their experience to enhance their portfolio and successfully obtained NTN ST3 post.

Main duties of the job

We are looking forward to appoint a Specialty Doctor for an exciting opportunity to enhance his/her portfolio in research, teaching and in advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Colorectal Surgery. The post will mainly be based at Ysbyty Gwynedd District General Hospital, Bangor; although few sessions may be at Llandudno General Hospital. 

 

Ysbyty Gwynedd is well established centre for offering Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery. Recently the hospital has become an established centre for Robotic (Versius) Surgery. The centre has 4 Colorectal Surgeons who are offer Robotic (Versius) Surgery to the patients from the North Wales.

 

The specialty doctor will be paired with Robotic Surgeons and expected to support post-care of patients undergoing Laparoscopic and Robotic Colorectal Resection. The post holder can use this opportunity to enhance skills in performing Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery. The fellow after achieving the required competencies would be supported to get hands on training to perform Robotic Surgery.

 

The post holder will also be expected to contribute to teaching of undergraduates from Cardiff and Bangor Universities. The post holder will be working for a team of consultants performing Laparoscopic and Robotic assisted Colorectal Surgery

The appointee will also be offered training opportunities in Upper & Lower GI endoscopy.

Besides routine duties, the fellow will share out of hours duties with registrars on 1 in 8/9 basis.

Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to provide a complete employment history
  • 48 months in surgery not including foundation modules
  • Broad Based experience in general surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Colorectal and General Surgery experience
  • Ability to perform Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
  • Previous experience in upper and lower GI endoscopy

Knowledge / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCS/FRCS
  • Satisfy UK/EEA Immigration regulations or eligible for work permit

Basic Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • General medical procedures and skills appropriate to the grade
  • Supervision and teaching of junior doctors and nursing staff
  • Ability to know when to ask for help
  • Ability to apply knowledge.
  • Ability to write relevant, legible clinical notes.
  • Safe and effective oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to involve patients in their management.
  • Ability to handle interviews with patients or relatives with tact and sensitivity
  • Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Competent in providing General Surgery Emergency On-call at Middle Grade
  • Clinical experience outside specialty.
  • Additional experience in Colorectal Surgery
