An exciting opportunity has arisen within Gloucestershire Managed Services (GMS) for a skilled Mechanical Maintenance Technician.
The role offers a competitive salary of £27,409 - £34,796 per annum depending on experience (includes a 17.8% market enhanced rate only applicable to the top point of the base salary) and additional on-call allowance where applicable.
The successful candidate will be based primarily at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, with occasional travel to healthcare properties across the county as required. The role involves working as part of a collaborative team on a rotating shift pattern, including early, day and late shifts. Some weekend and out-of-hours work will also be necessary, with participation in an on-call rota to provide essential support outside regular hours. As part of this role, the post holder will act as a Competent Person (CP) for mechanical systems such as water, ventilation (HVAC), pressure systems, or piped medical gases, ensuring compliance with Health Technical Memorandums (HTM), Health Building Notes (HBN) and relevant legislation. Main duties of the job
- Act as a Competent Person (CP) for mechanical systems such as water, HVAC, pressure systems, or piped medical gas, performing works as directed by the Workshop Manager (WSM) and Authorised Person (AP) leads.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical plant, equipment, and building services, including HVAC, plumbing, water systems, piped medical gas, steam, and pressure systems.
- Conduct planned and reactive maintenance, ensuring plant and equipment run efficiently.
- Perform complex and non-routine maintenance tasks.
- Manufacture, assemble, erect, and install new systems and components.
- Provide multi-skilled support, including carpentry and minor electrical tasks as required.
- Maintain compliance with Trust and GMS procedures, including participation in audits.
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety standards and statutory requirements.
- Work collaboratively with managers and department heads to schedule tasks with minimal disruption
- Participate in the on-call rota and out-of-hours shifts.
- Attend training and development courses as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct fault-finding diagnostics and repair of mechanical systems.
- Report defects in plant, equipment and building fabric promptly.
- Ensure high standards of workmanship and keep detailed service records.
- Coordinate resources, including labour, materials, and transportation.
- Operate the Estates/Facilities management system, completing job records and timesheets.
- Provide technical guidance to colleagues, apprentices, and contractors.
- Liaise with ward/department managers to arrange maintenance access.
- Ensure personal development through training and learning new techniques.
Working Environment:
- Exposure to heat, noise, chemicals, body fluids, and sewage.
- Moderate to heavy physical work, including lifting and working at height.
- Frequent concentration needed for fault-finding and interpreting drawings.
- Adherence to infection control protocols when working in clinical areas.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BTEC ONC, City & Guilds Level 3, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering
- Recognised and registered Mechanical Apprenticeship
- Full current UK Driver's license
Desirable criteria
- Plumbing, pipe fitting, building or carpentry experience relevant to maintenance tasks
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience in mechanical maintenance services
- Knowledge of mechanical drawings and schematics
- Experience in building services maintenance
- Familiarity with planned and reactive maintenance processes
Desirable criteria
- Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS)
- Experience working in a Primary and Secondary Care Hospital Estates Engineering environment
- Experience working across multiple trades, such as plumbing, HVAC, or carpentry
Knowledge/ Skills
Essential criteria
- Analytical fault-finding and diagnostic skills
- Experience repairing mechanical systems and devices
- Hands-on flexible approach with a commitment to high standards
- Knowledge of compliance safety legislation and proven experience in managing safety
Desirable criteria
- Mechanical, electrical, and building maintenance knowledge in healthcare premises
- Competent IT skills, including experience using maintenance reporting systems
- Knowledge of NHS England HTM and HBN guidance, including standards and infection control protocols
