Job overview

Trauma and Orthopaedic services are led by Specialty Directors, Mr Navraj Atwal and Mr Robert Gleeson.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic service comprises of 30 other Orthopaedic Consultants, with sub-specialties: Upper Limb, Foot and Ankle, Spine and Hip and Knee. With a further nine Associate Specialists and Specialty Doctors.

The appointee will work closely with the other 12 Consultants with a sub-specialism in lower limb arthroplasty and the wider Orthopaedic team to support both elective and trauma services.

In addition, the successful appointee will provide key input into the development GHFT’s trauma development in future services and improvements.

This is a full-time post.  However, any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post.  If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis.  Job share applicants are also welcome.

Main duties of the job

We wish to appoint new Consultant colleague to join our expanding service at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT). This is a post to expand our current service with a view to starting immediately. The appointee will complement and develop the service. The post holder will work at both Gloucester Royal Hospital, Cheltenham General Hospital and other Community Hospitals within Gloucestershire to provide services across the county. GHNHSFT are committed to ensuring that all new appointments to the organisation are subject to equitable working conditions to their colleges.

The role will be required to undertake a job plan which has a heavy focus in trauma; with a focus on periprosthetic and acute revision surgery. The post holder will also have an elective practice in lower limb arthroplasty

 

This is a full-time post, with a 10 PA job plan.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointment of the post has three main aims:

4  To join a team that provides comprehensive consultant-based patient-centred management

4  To participate in the Trauma Surgery on-call rota at Gloucester Royal Hospital

4  To strengthen and develop the hip and knee service, including hip replacements for hip fractures and complex proximal femoral trauma.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full General Medical Council registration.
  • On Specialist Register via: CCT or CESR-CP (Combined Programme) (proposed CCT/CESR-CP date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or  European Community Rights
  • ATLS Provider
Desirable criteria
  • Additional degree, diploma or postgraduate thesis relevant to the specialty
  • Relevant Fellowship

Experience

Essential criteria
  • General training leading to an appropriate higher Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgical qualification
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on problems in complex lower limb trauma and revision surgery
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on a range of both elective and emergency conditions
  • Validated logbook indicating adequate and appropriate level of specialist surgical operative experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in hip replacements for hip fractures and complex proximal femoral trauma.
