Job overview
Staff Nurse - Ward 2B, Band 5 (22.5 hours a week)
- To work alongside the Matron, the ward manager, the consultants and wider team to determine and deliver on service strategic objectives and to promote the overarching vision for the service
- To deliver, plan and evaluate patient care, ensuring that the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care is of high standard, encompassing the Trust vision of ‘best care for everyone
- To work collaboratively and cohesively with the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of patients and their families
- To maintain high visibility and clinical expertise, role modelling high standards of care, evidence-based practice and effective leadership within UK law, Nursing and Midwifery Council and Trust policies and guidelines
- To support clinical governance and quality framework, helping to embed the culture of continuous improvement
Main duties of the job
- Directly deliver, coordinate and supervise patient care, ensuring that the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care is of high standard, encompassing the Trust vision of ‘best care for everyone.
- Deliver, demonstrate and supervise safe and appropriate care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using highly specialised equipment and resources.
- Administer medications, within the Procedure for the Ordering, Prescribing, and Administration of Medications (POPAM) guidelines
- Disseminate contentious and delicate information appropriately and sensitively, ensure patient confidentiality is maintained
- Role model high standards of patient care, communication, commitment and organisation for others to follow.
- Utilise hospital computer systems, including the intranet, Trak-care and electronic patient records, to access and update patient information, while maintaining clear and accurate written records relevant to nursing practice
- Work collaboratively and cohesively with the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of patients and their families and provide high standards of care.
- Take a key role in the implementation of any clinical initiative or introduction of new equipment.
- Participate in mentorship programmes for students and other members of the team
- Actively support all agreed quality improvements within Head and Neck services and link with other teams and services as appropriate within and outside of Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As a Band 5 Staff Nurse you would be responsible for caring for your own caseload of patients. This would involve assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care needs and assessments. You would be caring for surgical patients following head and neck surgery but can also be caring for other surgical speciality patients on the ward. You would also be working with health care support workers and student nurses and need to delegate tasks effectively and safely. You would work closely and liaise with the multi-disciplinary team regularly to ensure patient care needs are met. You would practice in line with Trust policies and procedures and comply with data protection and confidentiality legislation. You would need to actively participate in both mandatory training and education development opportunities relevant to your role.

Essential criteria
- Active registration with the Nursing Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse
- Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of a professional portfolio, registration revalidation & commitment to lifelong learning
Desirable criteria
- Recognised teaching and assessing qualification
- Completion of Bronze Quality Improvement
Experience
Essential criteria
- Appropriate experience working in in a Head and Neck service or relevant speciality
- Evidence of building effective working relationships with members of the multi-disciplinary team and other key stakeholders
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of link nurse responsibilities / specific team involvement
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrates ability to use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess, diagnose, plan and offer a range of treatment options; deliver, evaluate and amend the treatment plan
- In depth knowledge of Head and Neck patients and operational processes within the speciality
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Self-motivated and able to work under own initiative and prioritise workload
- Personally resilient and able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment.
- Able to supervise non-registered and less experienced staff to ensure effective service and care delivery.
- Able to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to area of practice
- Demonstrates understanding and commitment to good record keeping using the Trust electronic and paper methods
Desirable criteria
- IT skills and experience including Electronic Patient Records, Trakcare, Safecare, NHS Mail, Health Roster, Microsoft Office
