Job overview

We wish to appoint a new consultant colleague to join our Renal service at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT). Our Renal base, and the base for this post, is Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

This is a general nephrology post with a significant GIM inpatient component and a 1 in 6 on call for the renal wards and renal referrals.

We are one of the largest Foundation Trusts in England with opportunities for new collaborative developments in line with the Renal Services Transformation Programme and GIRFT. We have an active Regional Operational Delivery network and have established a Renal Clinical Programme Group within our new ICS.

As a senior employee of our Trust you will work in close co-operation with and support, not just other clinical professionals, but also our managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to our patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities

We expect the post-holder to develop and lead a robust service in order to provide high quality care to patients with kidney disease and medical inpatients in a timely manner:

4  to be responsible for inpatients on a rota basis, currently 1 week in 6 on-call on ward 7b and 1 week in 6 on ward 7a (Monday-Friday).

4  to be responsible for providing advice and input to patients with renal problems referred by other specialties when on-call or when attending a clinic at Cheltenham General Hospital

4  to provide advice regarding patients with renal problems referred by GPs and other staff (eg pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners etc) including via Cinapsis and Advice and Guidance as needed

4  to provide outpatient clinics, currently approximately 3 per week, in CGH, GRH and Dursley

4  to review new patients to the renal wards during on-call weekends as well as potential discharges or those causing concern

4  to be available to review or advise regarding renal patients in ED or SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care) in a timely manner when on-call

4  to lead with on development of Home Therapies, including expansion of our Home Haemodialysis programme, working alongside our specialist nurses and dialysis provider

4  to contribute to consultant-led procedure lists. This includes medical PD tube insertion, for which separate training can be arranged if needed.

4  to conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of our Division’s and Trust’s agreed objectives

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full General Medical Council Registration
  • MRCP
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree
  • Teaching Qualification or Management/Leadership Qualification

Quality Improvement, Teaching and Research

Essential criteria
  • Participation in successful quality improvement projects
  • Must have an interest in teaching all grades of hospital and professional staff
  • Track record of critical reading
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Desirable criteria
  • Training in and experience of leading quality improvement projects
  • Practical experience in teaching posts
  • Plans for possible ongoing research projects relevant to service
  • Experience as co-investigator in NIHR approved trials. Current Good Clinical Practice training

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven clinical skills in Renal and General Medicine and in leading a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience and interest in home dialysis therapies
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in medical PD insertion
  • Additional experience in aspects of renal disease, e.g. conservative and palliative care

Management and Administrative Skills

Essential criteria
  • Willing and able to work with colleagues in other specialities, professions and roles to ensure the delivery of a high quality, safe and reliable service
  • Familiar with clinical governance
  • Willingness to accept responsibility and provide leadership
  • Awareness of current relevant developments within the wider NHS
  • Determination to have a key role in establishing and developing the service
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of clinical governance
  • Experience of protocol / pathway development and change management
