Job overview
This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a colleague with an interest in Medical Education to develop as a Clinical Educator. This post offers the opportunity to be involved in the exciting field of Simulation, working with all Medical Colleagues in all Specialties, Physician Associates, along with external stakeholders/other organisations such as Three Counties Medical School.
Main duties of the job
The Simulation Fellow, working in collaboration and under the leadership and guidance of the Simulation Tutors/PGME Fellows/ Consultants, will support all Resident Doctors/Staff and Associate Specialists/Locally Employed Doctors/Physician Associates, with the delivery of Simulation-based education, along with supporting NHS England (NHSE) curriculum, Regional and Local Teaching held at GHNHSFT.
Our PGME Strategy is to embed Medical Simulation Training through both in-situ and centre-based Simulation Learning, thus contributing to and improving Patient Care

We are part of Health Education South West - Severn and work closely with them to deliver important healthcare priorities and assist them in monitoring our progress.

We support and organise a wide range of clinical and educational skill development courses from Training the Trainers and Professional and Generic Skills to Simulation Training, Medical Grand Rounds and much more besides.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Post-Holder is not expected to be an expert in Simulation activities – no prior formal knowledge of educational theory or practice is required, enthusiasm for teaching is though a prerequisite.
To support the Education and Simulation Training, for all Resident Doctors/Staff and Associate Specialists/Locally Employed Doctors/Physicians Associates/Three Counties Medical School.
The PGME Simulation Fellow, once trained, will play a significant role in delivering the Generic Professional and Clinical Skills Training for the Foundation Programme, Core Programmes and Speciality Resident Doctors.
The PGME Simulation Fellow will be actively engaged in Simulation Course Planning, Delivery, Educational Management, and Educational Governance, supporting the Simulation Tutors and all those Medical Colleagues delivering Simulation.
These regular and significant learning/teaching opportunities will be supported by Senior Educators.
Supervision and mentoring by PGME Faculty will encourage the Fellow to develop skills in teaching and a deeper understanding of underpinning Educational Medical Simulation Frameworks.
To develop their skills in a wide range of educational methods, including Patient-based-Learning, Simulation and Clinical Skills, and Debrief Sessions.
Once trained, in collaboration with Simulation Faculty, support, the Simulation “Train-the-Trainers” GHNHSFT Course, that is available and open to all Trust Colleagues of all disciplines, both Clinical and Non-Clinical.
To support, develop, implement and deliver innovative Simulation Training and Courses, optimising co-operation and the use of all existing Trust resources.
To participate in PGME Departmental Meetings/NHSE Simulation Network Meetings/Medical Education Board.
In supporting Educational Governance and Research, to assist with the audit of feedback from courses/teaching sessions.
To research the benefits of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and Simulation Based Education (DBE.)
To devise and implement Research activity, with the aspiration of presenting at Conferences Locally/Nationally.
To work collaboratively towards a Quality Improvement Initiative to expand the approach to Simulation Based Education for all colleagues under the PGME umbrella.
To promote the culture of Simulation within Medical Teams.
To help prepare applications for educational grants to enhance simulation capabilities in the trust, under the supervision of simulation tutors, specialty consultants and the PGME team
Following a training period, the PGME Simulation Fellow will be offered the opportunity to gain an educational qualification to the level of Certificate or above.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registration with a professional body (e.g. GMC, NMC, HCPC)
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of formal simulation training (e.g. Simulation Train the Trainers course or equivalent)
- Relevant postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in healthcare education (e.g. PGCert in Medical Education, ALS instructor status)
- Certification in BLS/ALS or equivalent clinical skills training
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working in/for an NHS Provider
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in Primary and/or Secondary Care
- Experience of supporting or delivering simulation-based education
- Experience of organising, planning or facilitating training sessions for healthcare professionals
- Experience of completing applications for funding requests or bids
- Experience of working with indirect supervision

- Understanding of simulation technologies and their application in medical training
- Awareness of the simulation-based education requirements across different specialty curriculums for resident doctors
- Awareness of relevant legislation, local and national policies and procedures affecting simulation-based education
- Ability to troubleshoot and maintain simulation equipment, with an aptitude for learning technical skills related to simulation technology
