Job overview

Darzi Fellow in Neurology Band 7/ 8a

The GHFT neurology department is looking for a Darzi fellow to improve the care of individuals with headache and migraine in the county, common disorders and major causes of disability.

Whilst frequently managed in primary care, headache and migraine are common reasons for referral to neurologists, often at the request of the patient, and the number of referrals is steadily rising. Long waiting lists are a frequent cause of frustration. The advent of CGRP pathway treatments for migraine has been a significant development for many with previously refractory migraine symptoms, but has also added further pressure.

We also know that headache is a common reason for attendance at A&E, where recognition of primary headache disorders can be more challenging, and subsequent admissions and investigations can be expensive and unnecessary.

Across the UK, including in Gloucestershire, there is a mismatch between the demand for neurological services and capacity. Headache is a leading contribution, and one that we believe can be managed differently, and with scope to significantly improve patient care and patient experience.

We are looking for an individual to evaluate this topic, and consider innovative and imaginative solutions that encompass primary and secondary care. We will provide the individual with full support for this project, the Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership in Health and tailor clinical duties according to educational needs.

Main duties of the job

The Darzi Fellowship Clinical Leadership Programme is designed to build the training and development of senior clinical leaders. It entails a 12-month Fellowship Challenge alongside a PGCert Leadership in Health (Darzi) over the course of the 2023/24 academic year. The programme offers Fellows a unique opportunity to develop the capability skills necessary for their future roles as clinical leaders. It creates opportunities to work with medical directors (or equivalent) and lead the development of service changes and quality. We welcome applications from experienced and dedicated clinicians who have a proved interest in neurology and working with our system partners to develop a project for change. The Darzi Fellowship is considered a prestigious post and is highly recommended for aspiring clinical leaders.
