Job overview
Mayhill unit is the day surgery and elective surgical admissions unit based in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. We are seeking a motivated nurse leader with a shared vision in delivery of the very best patient experience and outcomes, whilst continuing to strive for quality improvements in partnership with the multidisciplinary team. With up to 80% of all elective surgery now being delivered as day surgery the team is integral to delivering the elective recovery plan.
The successful applicant will be managing the team in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital delivering exceptional care for the patients attending the unit. They will lead the team as a Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse working alongside the other Sisters/ Charge nurses on the unit to support the team and reporting to the Matron. They will be ambitious, proactive and highly motivated embracing compassionate leadership principles demonstrating kindness and respect with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Main duties of the job
To operationally lead and manage the Mayhill nursing team in Gloucester showcasing clinical excellence and promoting innovative practice.
Be a role model, providing regular direct clinical care.
Support the implementation of both clinical and non-clinical governance and facilitating the modernisation of patient services.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Supportive to all team members and other members of the multidisciplinary team we work closely with.
Have the skills to communicate with colleagues, patients and their relatives with sensitivity and empathy
To manage effectively the funded establishment of the ward through recruitment, retention and development of staff.
To have knowledge of clinical governance, policy and procedure and quality assurance frameworks
To demonstrate clinical expertise, role-modelling high standards of care, evidence based practice and effective leadership within UK law, NMC and Trust policies and guidelines.
Have the ability to work under pressure in an ever changing, challenging environment whilst maintaining excellent standards of patient care

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Provide professional leadership to nurses, and students, on the day surgery units acting as a role model within the department, surgical division and the Trust ensuring that competence in managerial and clinical practice is both developed and maintained.
Be visible and maintain responsibility for the department , ensuring that day to day delivery is timely and safe, supporting the organisation to meet the corporate agenda; for example, Care Quality Commission and legislation.
Lead on and facilitate excellent care and deal with issues or complaints using analytical skills to problem solve and find solutions to ensure best practice and best patient care outcomes are achieved. To ensure that services are continually developed. This will include meeting with patients and their representatives to manage and resolve complaint issues.
Be a visible, accessible, and influential figure on whom staff, patients, families and carers can rely, to ensure the fundamentals of care are delivered effectively and efficiently.
Provide professional leadership to all nurses, acting as a role model within the department, surgical division and the Trust ensuring that competence in managerial and clinical practice is both developed and maintained.
Provide assurance to the Matron and Divisional Director for Quality and Nursing that there is continuous improvement in the delivery of clinical services within day surgery that are tailored to the needs of the patients.
Provide clear clinical leadership for nursing.
The post holder will deputise for the Matron as required
Support the development of nursing skills in all aspects of the role providing expert clinical knowledge and specialised advice.
Provide nursing leadership, set and maintain professional nursing standards, provide professional nursing advice and direction to the staff.
Be professionally and managerially responsible for the named staff in the unit at any one time

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Active registration with NMC as a Registered Nurse
- Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of a professional portfolio, registration revalidation and commitment to lifelong learning
- Recognised Nursing Degree or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Recognised Leadership qualification or commitment to work towards
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of leading and managing a team
- Knowledge and experience of change management, quality assurance processes and working within a budget

- Research aware
- Experience of working within a surgical environment
