A fantastic opportunity have arisen in Southend Hospital to join an organisation with a reputation for excellence in the way it cares for the people it serves. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Pharmacy Technical Officer  to join the Pharmacy Technical Services Unit!

Pharmacy Technical Services Unit comprises the Asetic Production Unit, Pre-pack unit, Radiopharmacy and Cytotoxic unit. Supervised by the Team Leader in charge, the post holder will provide support services to the Pharmacy Technical Services department, including the ordering, receipt, storage and supply of Pharmaceuticals and other stocks, the manufacture of aseptic products in both the aseptic and cytotoxic unit, Radiopharmacy and manage day to day the pre-packing of medication in the pre-pack unit.


You will also assist senior staff with support duties(such as cleaning aseptic rooms)  essential to the smooth functioning on the unit.
37.5  hours per week 
The hours are:
Monday to Friday 7.5 hours per day
There will be bank holiday working and saturday working on a rota basis. there will be early and late finishes based on a rota.

There will be cross site working
While working in Radiopharmacy on rotation will be required to start at 6:45am

Main duties of the job

  • To support Pharmacists and Technicians in providing a high quality pharmaceutical services within the Aseptic production unit to meet the needs of the trust and external customer requirements.
  • The post holder will be required to maintain operator validation.
  • The post holder will be responsible for the compounding of all aseptic medicines to both the trust and external customers including Cytotoxics, clinical trials, PCA’s, OPAT, Radiopharmaceuticals and other aseptically prepared products.
  • The post holder will be responsible for the management of the day to day operation of the pre-packing unit together with the Senior Pharmacy Assistance.
  • The post holder will support senior staff with the prioritising and allocating of work for the Chemotherapy, Radiopharmacy and aseptic unit.
  • The post holder will communicate with service users to ensure timely supply of prepared products.
  • The post holder will be required to carry out stock management duties including receiving, correct storage, daily stock count, expiry date checks, investigating stock discrepancies and the ordering of drugs and consumables..
  • The post holder will provide administrative support carrying out clerical duties as required.
  • The post holder will supervise and be responsible for the training of junior members of staff

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Responsible for co-ordinating and overseeing the work of less experienced staff within the unit.
  • Act as a role model for SATO’s, ATOs, student technicians and trainees.
  • Plan and organise straightforward activities on a day to day basis..
  • Responsible for providing leadership and assisting senior staff with prioritising work.
  • Assist with the review of aseptic technique of the team.
    • Compete environmental testing duties e.g. contact plates, weekly plates and leak testing isolators ensuring they are completed when required.
    • Following the identification of untoward microbiological results that have led to quality exception reports or breached warnings or action limits.  Co-ordinate, investigate and resolve any relevant actions identified and document their completion.
    • Maintain competency in compounding, assembly, labelling and accuracy checking aseptic products through regular participation in production.
    • Dispense outsourced chemotherapy and aseptic products.
    • Manufacture radiopharmaceuticals
    • Clean equipment and rooms
    • Install Radiopharmacy generator

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Entry level GCSE or equivalent pass maths
  • NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy services or equivalent aseptic units
  • Entry level GCSE or equivalent pass English
  • Able to demonstrate theoretical knowledge level 3
Desirable criteria
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician or Registered SMT Technician
  • Level 3 Pharmacy services or SMT qualification

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant relevant experience in aseptic unit
  • Understand GMP
  • 6-12 months in a role following strict guidelines and standard operating procedures
  • Worked in a team
  • Supervise and train staff in current or previous role
  • Ability to use microsoft office - word, excel, outlook
Desirable criteria
  • Has radiopharmacy experience
