Band 6 Occupational Therapist - Inpatients

Band 6

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is now one of the largest trusts in the country, serving a population of 1.2 million people. Our newly formed Trust, comprising acute hospital sites at Broomfield in Chelmsford, Basildon and Southend,  is determined to provide the best health services for its local population. We are a well-led, high-performing and innovative organisation working in the best interests of the people we serve.

Job overview

At Southend University Hospital we are committed to providing a supportive environment for the development of Occupational Therapists.  Our department operates an integrated therapy service, where Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists work alongside each other in a variety of the clinical areas. The culture of multi-disciplinary working is well established and respected within the hospital.

We are currently looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our admission avoidance service as part of a team working across all the front door areas.  This position offers the opportunity to develop clinically and managerially in a fast paced environment working within our established Inpatient Therapy Team.

Our Inpatient Therapy Team is led by our Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist with the support of Band 7 Team Leaders who are highly experienced in their fields. We have regular Occupational therapy team meetings, a practice development Occupational Therapist and actively encourage CPD.

In return we offer training and clinical development opportunities with a comprehensive in-service training program and regular clinical supervision.  We also provide additional support in order for staff to attend recognised courses within the area of the post to support staff development.  The Therapy Team is also committed to supporting the development of leadership skills at Band 6 encouraging staff to attend relevant courses provided by the Trust.

Main duties of the job

These posts are part of our Inpatient Team which offers the opportunity to work across a variety of inpatient areas including medical & frailty wards and the acute medical unit (front door areas)

The role involves the rapid assessment and management of patients presenting to the hospital to facilitate safe discharge as soon as possible with the provision of any necessary  equipment and care recommendations.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to be flexible and thrive in a fast paced environment. They will be responsible for day to day management of the service delivery and manage a complex caseload with support from their band 7 team lead. They will gain experience in supervising staff and become an accredited practice placement educator.

This role requires strong leadership skills and the ability to engage others, with a proactive approach to service development. You will also demonstrate a strong commitment to a person centred approach in line with the Trust Values and Behaviours.

Together with the team leaders in our other in-patient specialities, you will support the Occupational Therapy Clinical Lead and the Therapies Manager in the strategic and operational planning for the department.

Working for our organisation

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is now one of the largest in the country, with a workforce of approximately 15,000 who serve a population of 1.2 million people.

We work together, and in conjunction with MSE Health and Care Partnership, to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients in a compassionate way, and provide a respectful, but vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

From facilities through to consultant specialists we want to be the best, to achieve this we need to recruit not just those who are the finest in their field but also those who have the potential to be. Yes, experience is important but so is outlook – if you are dynamic, forward-thinking and enthusiastic we want you to join us.

We not only offer you a good working environment with flexible working opportunities, but also the opportunity to develop your career with access to appropriate training for your job and the support to succeed and progress

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team within a defined area of the service to assess and help patients return home as quickly as possible, while ensuring their medical and therapy needs are being met. They will contribute to improving the patient’s journey by providing early  goal-setting and intervention at the start of a hospital journey facilitating safe discharge.

The successful candidate would benefit from experience in a generic capacity enabling them to complete core assessments but the ability to then utilise their specialist occupational therapy skills and problem solving the  individual within a fast paced environment. This ‘Assess’ model improves the ‘flow’ of patients from admission, through their stay in hospital and back to independent living when they return home.

The post is supported by a well-established supervision and in-service training programme. There are also opportunities for study leave and course funding both internally and externally.

The role will include the supervision of students from University of Essex and University of Hertfordshire and the mentoring of Band 5 Occupational Therapists, Activities of Daily Living Advisors and Rehabilitation Assistants.

The post holder will actively participate in the weekend rotas and extended working hours.
