Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for nurses interested in a career in  Cancer Nursing .

The Chemotherapy Nurse Trainee will support patients with a diagnosis of cancer undergoing  systemic anti cancer therapy (SACT).

You will develop clinical expertise and professional knowledge in the delivery of chemotherapy/SACT by undertaking  competency based training  with support and guidance from the Chemotherapy Nurse practitioners  that will enable you to progress to a band 6 role  on successful  completion of the programme. This programme can take 12-24 months to complete .

You will work and act as a role model for professional practice at all times and deliver high standards of nursing and supportive care to patients, their families and carers.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited from enthusiastic registered nurses to join a dedicated multi-disciplinary chemotherapy team and work in our purpose built 22  chair Chemotherapy Day Unit at Southend  Hospital.

Ideally applicants will have at least 1 year experience of caring for patients with cancer in a general setting and wish to develop their knowledge and skills further by working within the specialty of Oncology/Chemotherapy/SACT

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Inform and educate patients on the prescribed chemotherapy and its side effects

To counsel, support and educate patients and their carers on all aspects of their cancer journey be they newly diagnosed or being treated with palliative intent.

Ensure that the patient has consented to treatment and reconfirms agreement to treatment

Undertake patient assessment, recognition and recording of chemotherapy induced toxicities using common toxicity criteria.

Recognition of dose modifications required for cytotoxic drug toxicities

Protocol driven decision making regarding suitability for treatment – to include blood parameters and patient performance status.

Professional/Clinical

Essential criteria
  • First Level registration with NMC Previous postregistration experience. Good communication skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of post regristration study in cancer care. Cannulation skills. Oncology/haematology experience

Education

Essential criteria
  • Educated to or working towards degree level.
Desirable criteria
  • 1 year post registration experience

Research

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of clinical trials and treatment Protocols
