As our business expands, we are looking for a manager with a proven track record of success in physical and online sales to help develop our retail offer. This is a permanent role that encompasses shop sales across multiple sites, staff mentoring and e-commerce development.

You will need to be a quick learner, be open-minded and enthusiastic when it comes to trialling new initiatives. You must be able to manage diverse teams across more than one location; leading, delegating, developing and inspiring those around you.

Main duties of the job

  • To manage your current shop, maximising revenue and profits.
  • To manage new shops in surrounding locations, where required.
  • To lead on all new e-commerce initiatives, assisting with training in other locations
  • To identify, mentor and develop assistant managers and volunteers with potential
  • To assist the area manager in identifying areas of growth and development.
  • To analyse data to identify patterns of performance and establish KPI’s.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

The following list is not exhaustive and is intended only to indicate the range of activities that the post holder will be required to undertake. Further duties and responsibilities may be added, as identified, from time to time and it is expected that the post-holder will accept all reasonable additions/amendments and developments of the job.

 

Developing Physical Shops

  • To be responsible for developing sales, through merchandising, pricing, events and analysis of performance
  • To space plan shop floor area.
  • To help open new stores and establish a strong team within each, where required

 

E-commerce

  • To set an example to other shops on all e-commerce
  • To coach and advise other shops on e-commerce where required
  • To be the first shop to trial new e-commerce initiatives (eg. Amazon)
  • To assist with implementation of best practice across e-commerce, including providing feedback to e-commerce manager

 

 

 

Mentoring and coaching

  • To train, manage and mentor new managers, Assistant Managers and volunteers
  • To ensure that Assistant Managers are deployed effectively to manage shops.
  • To ensure the mentoring and coaching of Assistant Managers to contribute to the improvement of efficiency, sales & profit.
  • To recruit new Assistant Managers and other shop staff, ensuring that the right candidates are selected.

 

Income/Sales

  • To ensure that the shop meets sales targets set in collaboration with the Area Manager.
  • To actively promote Gift Aid, sign up donors and achieve performance targets across your shops
  • To implement marketing campaigns and sales promotions to increase sales.
  • To ensure that the shop is competing effectively with local competitors.

 

Analysis

  • To work with your area manager on analysis, helping you make decisions to ensure the successful and safe trading operation of the shops.
  • To use data to help shape pricing structure in your shop(s)
  • To work with your area manager in understanding the reasons behind shops’ performance across the area.

 

Premises

  • To hold shop keys, opening and closing the premises for trading hours, ensuring that the hours are strictly adhered to and responding to emergency call out, when necessary.
  • To ensure that the shop is well maintained, and goods are merchandised in accordance with best practice.
  • To create a safe and secure environment for staff and volunteers.
  • To ensure that security procedures are understood and implemented by all staff and volunteers.
  • To ensure that all statutory responsibilities are met, including Fire and Health & Safety regulations.
  • To inform the Area Manager of necessary repairs and maintenance, agree action plan and costs and organise for work to take place using authorised Contractors.

 

Stock Management

  • To supervise and maximise the efficiency of the collection system.
  • To ensure the highest possible resale value of donated stock.
  • To accept, sort, price and display goods for sale to maximise income within agreed guidelines.
  • To ensure that all goods sold comply with safety and other legislative requirements.
  • To identify and arrange for a valuation of goods that might be valuable ensuring Area Manager’s awareness.
  • To apply company best practice for displays, merchandising and window dressing, at all times.
  • To control stock density and rotation.
  • To initiate local stock and sales promotions.

 

 

 

Staff Responsibility

  • To lead and develop the staff and volunteers in your shop(s), encouraging effective communication, setting objectives and helping to foster a positive team spirit through regular team meetings.
  • To ensure that the shop is adequately staffed at all times, including days off, lunch breaks and holidays in order to maintain levels of service and ensure cover for own holiday periods.
  • In association with the Volunteer Services Manager and the Area Manager, to recruit, train, support and co-ordinate the work of the staff and volunteers in accordance with Havens Hospices policies and procedures.
  • To manage development of volunteers, including the selection and introduction of volunteers as supervisors.
  • To conduct appraisals and performance reviews as and when required.
  • To be responsible for the health & safety and welfare of staff.

 

Public Relations

  • To identify local publicity opportunities with Area Managers and to liaise with head office in order to take advantage of those opportunities.
  • To collaborate with the Area Manager to organise special events and/or promotions.
  • To publicise the shop and enhance the image of Havens Hospices.
  • To maintain good relations with the public.

 

Health & Safety

  • To ensure that all staff and volunteers adopt a safe working practice in accordance with Havens Hospices Health & Safety policy.
  • To ensure that all incidents and injuries are recorded and reported to the Area Manager in accordance with RIDDOR.
  • To work with the Area Manager to ensure that any Health & Safety issues are resolved quickly and effectively.

 

Team / Organisational Work

  • To foster a good working relationship with all Trustees, Executives and managers, in addition to your shop team(s)
  • To attend staff meetings as required.

 

Personal Development

  • To participate in annual appraisals
  • To participate in training provided by Head Office to achieve those developmental needs
  • To be prepared to develop skills and competencies that are required to meet the demands of the role as it evolves over time period.

Skills & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of IT skills, including using Microsoft Office, Teams, Outlook and Excel.
