A rare and exciting opportunity to join an established multidisciplinary pain service as a Lead Nurse has arisen at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. This role encompasses both inpatient and outpatient pain services across Basildon & Orsett Hospitals respectively.
We are looking for someone who is a positive role model, who consistently demonstrates the Trust values with a passion for supporting and developing others, while delivering high quality, safe care to our patients.
Main duties of the job
The role requires a high level of expertise and skills in acute, chronic, and complex pain management. The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership and guidance to specialist practitioners within the team, and to oversee service development across inpatient and outpatient service provision.
The inpatient pain service at Basildon Hospital is primarily nurse-led with a weekly Consultant ward round. The specialist nursing team collaborate with all multidisciplinary team members to ensure appropriate, evidence-based interventions and education for inpatients with acute and complex pain needs.
The outpatient pain team at Orsett Hospital is a multi-disciplinary team who offer a full range of pain management therapies and interventions. The MSE neuromodulation service is hosted at this site for patients referred for neuromodulatory procedures. This includes spinal cord stimulation, and intrathecal drug delivery, as well as chronic pain medication management.
The team is proactive, innovative and participate in research projects, and are also members of various regional, national, and international societies related to the specialty.

Your role will be to lead on service development within the team during the processes of change, working autonomously to assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of evidence-based care.
You will be required to provide expert clinical advice and specialist clinical and theoretical knowledge to clinical colleagues, patients, relatives/carers.
Exhibit excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills in your capacity as a line manager for the nursing and allied health professionals within the service, and the ability to be a positive role model.

- NMC Registered Nurse
- Masters degree (or relevant experience)
Desirable criteria
- Non-medical prescriber
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive clinical knowledge and experience in all aspects of pain management: acute and complex chronic pain
- Experience of effective change management to implement evidence into clinical practice.
- Knowledge of indications and risk of drug therapies for pain
Desirable criteria
- Presented at a professional conference
Communication Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to demonstrate excellent leadership skills
- Able to evidence skills in delivering education and training in a menaingful way, using robust teaching methods and learning theories
