Job overview
We are inviting applicants to apply for the Glaucoma Clinical Fellow post in Ophthalmology at Ipswich Hospital.
The successful applicant will be expected to participate actively in the diagnosis, management and follow-up of patients under supervision and on his/her own. This is a full-time clinical fellowship post for a fixed term period of 12 months with possibility to extend for a further 12 months.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will work under two consultants appointed to the hospital. Currently a comprehensive service is offered including all glaucoma surgeries (Trabeculectomy. Baerveldt and Ahmed implants, Istent, presiflow and other micro incision devises) Laser treatments (YAG, SLT and cyclodiode). Both consultants are responsible for the training and development of a clinical fellow as well as any trainee doctors assigned to glaucoma rotations.
The post-holder will:
- Work with colleagues to provide a service with the highest standard of care
- Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
- Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatients and A&E
- Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care
- Offer support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team

We are building a new elective orthopaedic centre for ESNEFT at Colchester Hospital. It will be one of the biggest centres in the country and will ensure we can retain complex and low volume cases locally for the people we serve.
We are also now building a £7million specialist interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit at Colchester.
At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties will include:
• Management of urgent cases within the emergency clinic
• Other sub specialty clinics as needed
• General clinics and cataract pre assessment clinics
• Laser clinics according to experience
• Intra vitreal injection lists according to experience
• Cross cover of vacant cataract lists according to experience
• Supervision of junior medical staff in the Service
• There is a General On-Call commitment.

Essential
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration with a license to practice
- FRCOphth OR MRCOphth OR equivalent
- Broad knowledge of General Ophthalmology
- Good Clinical Judgement
- Be near to or completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology
- Potential to cope with stressful situations & undertake responsibility
- Good communication & organisational skills
- Team player
Desirable criteria
- Higher Qualification
- Experience in cataract surgery and laser
- Use of Database Systems and Electronic Patient Records (i.e. Medisoft)
- Demonstrated commitment to specialise in Retina via Teaching & Audit
