As a health Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist, lead and supervise the day to day delivery of a diagnostic service, within a section of Microbiology. To provide advanced biomedical science technical support in a specific area of expertise by providing training, advice, technical development, troubleshooting and supervision within area of expertise. Maintaining an up to date knowledge and competency to practise within Microbiology. By participating, preparing, processing diagnostic investigations on biological specimens in accordance with agreed protocols and standard operational procedures (SOP) ensuring the department maintains UKAS and HSE compliance as well as laboratory training status.

The Trust is undergoing a procurement process with West Hertfordshire Hospital Trust and East & North Hertfordshire Hospital Trust to create an ICS wide Pathology Partnership. This will entail working with Health Services Laboratories (HSL) a Private Partner. Pathology staff will be TUPE’d across to HSL on 1^st March 2025. The Microbiology staff will continue to work in their current location at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust until Spring 2026. At which time the Microbiology team will relocate to a brand-new laboratory facility based in Croxley park, Rickmansworth, Watford.

Main duties of the job

• • To work within the Microbiology team to ensure that all specimens are processed in a timely, appropriate manner paying particular attention to detail and quality.
  • Maintenance, development and review of SOPs
  • Will lead a few areas of the lab and be responsible for all documentation and techniques in that area.
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance to recognise poor performance and act accordingly.
  • Assists with the receipt of goods and maintenance of consumable stocks
  • Is aware of the cost of resources and to work as economically as practical in achieving objectives
  • Suggests ways to improve working practices
  • Performs any other duties, commensurate with the post and in the interest of the service
  • Supervise and organise the workflow through all sections of the lab making the best possible use of available resources.
  • To train and supervise junior staff.
  • Liaise with consultants within and outside the department to identify and implement new techniques.
  • Isolate, identify and perform antibiotic susceptibility testing on microorganisms.
  • Interpret and report results via hospital computer system
