Job overview

Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust Maternity department will be offering an enhanced Stop Smoking Service to support a national drive to improve health outcomes for parents and babies.

With appropriate training the Maternity Stop Smoking Advisor will deliver face to face and telephone behavioural support, and deliver pharmacotherapy as per a specific tobacco dependence care plan.

To support the day to day running of the maternity stop smoking service to ensure safe, well organised and evidenced based care is offered routinely to smokers following referrals from booking appointment and from health care professionals other times of pregnancy.

Provide support in a range of settings as required for the delivery of the smoking cessation service for example telephone appointments and community clinics.  

To support the delivery of the service key performance and reporting indicators for tobacco dependency.  The Maternity Stop smoking advisor will engage in public health and community development activities in the reduction of health inequalities.

This post will initially be a Band 3 until completion of competencies and training required of a stop smoking advisor.

Main duties of the job

Organising own daily workload and work unsupervised.  Maintain a high standard of work and prioritise own workload according to the needs of the service, individual needs including equality, diversity and social inclusion in all aspects of work.

Close working relationship with the Healthy Lifestyle Midwife and other Stop Smoking Advisors,  also to support

Act on referrals, including self- referrals into the service.

Work with pregnant women and pregnant people to identify the most appropriate tobacco dependency treatment pathway.

Record and report activities and results.

We employ 3,500 staff and serve a local population of around 350,000 people living in west Essex and east Hertfordshire, centred on the M11 corridor and the towns of Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford and Epping. Our extended catchment area incorporates a population of up to 500,000 and includes the areas of Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assess and develop treatment plans for service users identified as smokers throughout the treatment period

Plan and undertake virtual and face to face appointments, holding motivational conversations.

Implement treatment plans and provide behavioural support to service users who engage with the service.

Advise on pharmacotherapy including e cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapy, take and record carbon monoxide monitor readings.

Accurately input data and retrieve information from IT systems in use. Maintain contemporaneous and accurate records of actions taken and care offered.  

Work closely with the Healthy Lifestyle Midwife, community midwives and all members of the multi disciplinary team.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • An awareness of understanding of drivers of ill health especially smoking
Desirable criteria
  • Know how to find out about local services and how to support people to use them

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to prioritise workload, co-ordinate own work
  • Good written communication skills, basic computer skills and motivational skills to inspire others
Desirable criteria
  • Data base and audit skills

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Maths and English or equivalent
  • Ability to successfully complete National Centre for Smoking Cessation Training
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ in health related studies or equivalent experience in community settings

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a health promotion/healthcare setting
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of providing smoking cessation support or supporting people with behavioural change
  • Working with pregnant women and pregnant people
