We have expanded our department, and are seeking passionate, dedicated and caring experienced emergency care nurses to join our team, who share our vision for excellence. Experience of shift leading and managing patient flow will be essential, as is the ability to dynamically stream patients to the appropriate caregiver. You must be forward thinking, and committed to the ever-evolving needs of the department and be proactive in the journey of improving the experience of the general public who access our emergency services daily.

We are a diverse team who strive for further improvement and will be able to support you to develop and enhance your knowledge in both emergency medicine and leadership and management skills.  

You will be responsible for the care and development of both junior colleagues and student nurses, creating an atmosphere conducive to learning and practice development, whilst also planning, providing and maintaining a high standard of effective nursing care to our patients and their relatives.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, within the Emergency Department, you will be responsible for ensuring that safe, effective and high-quality care is provided round-the-clock, taking the lead in the management of all clinical duties, exploring safe provision of the service through skill-mix review and allocation to workload, working in partnership with your associate director of nursing, head of nursing, matrons, clinical service groups, other wards across the healthcare group and wider trust, as well as additional services provided across the healthcare community.

You will also support the development of all staff, creating an atmosphere conducive to learning and practice development and continuously develop and enhance your own knowledge and skills, which will directly influence consistent standards of clinical practice.

The Emergency Department at the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust, is one of the busiest emergency departments in the country (relative to size). Each year, the adult and paediatric departments assess, treat, admit and or discharge in excess of 100,000 patients per year. within the department there is a resuscitation, majors, further assessment, rapid assessment and treatment, streaming and respiratory areas. The department is supported by a large Urgent Treatment centre, consisting of a GP stream and Minor Injury Unit.

  • Emergency Care related post qualification course
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership course
  • Completion of Practice Assessor Course
  • Evidence of CPD

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of applying quality governance processes
  • Strong abilities to triage patients safely and effectively
  • 18 months experience as a Band 6 in an Emergency Department
Desirable criteria
  • Prior experience in other Acute care areas
  • Prior experience of supporting junior staff with learning and development
  • Research and Audit Experience
